There’s Nothing Like a Dayatthespa
Sunday’s feature race, the Sweetest Chant for three year old fillies going a mile on turf, the ninth race at Gulfstream Park, looks easy if performance figures are the measure. And they usually are.
The problem for me is that the second favorite is a horse I’ve been waiting for since last she ran over the local course. The short comment in the past performances is “very rough trip. No hyperbole there.
When last seen, Dayatthespa (5-2)was chasing the pace in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf down on the inside, was outrun on the turn, then finished one-paced after that, beaten 5-1/2 lengths. It was a creditable effort.
City Zip filly working every seven days for Chad Brown, who’s had them ready to go off the bench all meeting long. Her best race will take this.
Don’t take it from me or the chart callers concerning Ann of The Dance’s (3-1) last race; check out the replay of her last in the Ginger Brew at SaratogaBets.com (Dec. 24, 11th race).
The filly tried to make up ground twice but was prevented from doing so, including clipping heels at mid-turn. The fact she was beaten three quarters of a length under the circumstances was nothing short of remarkable. Hot riding Julien Leparoux replaces Luis Saez.
However, we must take Dayatthespa to win at 2-1 or greater, an exacta box with Ann Of The Dance, and using Slew’s Revenge (10-1) in exotics, filly who hasn’t gone beyond sprint distances but won her course debut, is bred for distance on the dam’s side and picks up Johnny V.
