City of Vengeance a Tough Out in Gulf Feature

City of Vengeance has a solid edge over today's rivals, hovering in layover territory. His debut was fast--but not too fast as to be considered an automatic regression--and he’s had 5+ weeks recovery time; blowing out strongly for this on Mar. 6. It’s 50-50 whether he runs back to debut, making 1-1 acceptable, if you agree with the premise.

Colormepompom and Grand Jr offer value at early line odds; consider a win bet on either or both, price-dependent, of course. I’m likely to key the fave in super-exotics, exacta box the three mentioned here, using D'tumbling Dice beneath our key(s) only. Late odds will dictate the win play.

Number of Selections since 2008: 1703

Number of Win and Place Finishes: 511-330

Amount Wagered: $3,406 [to win only]

Total Dollar Return on Investment: $3,509.40

Profit to Date: $103.40

Trying to Be Smart in Gulf Feature

Today’s Gulfstream Park feature looks like a promising opportunity in that it’s wide open and each of the top four horses on our Ratings scale have a good margin over the early line Chad Brown-trained/Johnny ridden fave. The knock on top TER Smartfly is the November layup, but at 10-1 I can afford to gamble.

Beneath ‘Fly’ is a three-horse cluster in which Kitten’s Dumplings offers value at early line odds (5-1). Those two fillies are a good fit at the top of the ticket with exacta boxes including Lori’s Store (4-1) and Patsy’s Holiday (9-2). For the super-exotics, we will add Cay Dancer (3-1) on the third and fourth lines.

Given the layoff, we're going to need 6-1 or greater on Smartfly whereas 7-2 would be fair odds on the ‘Kitten’.

For the record, a win play of Smartfly at 6-1 or more.

Number of Selections since 2008: 1702

Number of Win and Place Finishes: 511-329

Amount Wagered: $3,404 [to win only]

Total Dollar Return on Investment: $3,509.40

Profit to Date: $105.40

How Deep Is the Ocean; How High Is the Sky?

Personally, we were shocked to learn that on our Energy Ratings scale, Ocean Knight (99) had a wide margin on the group assembled for the Tampa Bay Derby, including classy stable-mate and 8-5 early line favorite Carpe Diem.

Owned by same connections, Ocean Knight (2-1) supposedly was headed to NY until the threat of bad weather altered that course. We'll take the undefeated, potential freak to win with no price restrictions.

In order to potentially take some money out of this race, we'll key the McLaughlin trainee 1-2 in super-exotics with Ami’s Flatter (15-1), getting the Lasix/blinkers makeover, the tough tripping, purposefully-working Johnny Be Good (15-1) beneath talented, meet-leading Antonio Gallardo, Divining Rod (6-1), who pushed O.K. to the max in the S.F. Davis prep and Danzig Moon (12-1) from the Casse barn that points to this race every year.
