A Joy to Behold

In today's nominal feature, the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic, the biggest Grade 1 of the afternoon, I'm torn.

Believe that Oscar Performance (3-1) is a legitimate star turfer, and that theory will be tested in his maiden run vs. his elders. And he's the likely controlling speed, dangerous at any trip, even a mile and a half.

But we need to fade Sadler's Joy (4-1) who finally has come into his own at 4.

His virtues are obvious; he has improved incrementally virtually his entire career, never stops trying, loves the distance, and was very sharp in his blowout for this earlier this week.

We'll take Sadler's Joy at anything close to early line odds to win, and exacta key boxes with the three-year-old and hard-hitting Money Multiplier (7-2).

If At First You Don’t Succeed… Reload ADW

I'm streaky, but this recent run raises absurd to a new level...

Thursday, we believed a Chad Brown-trained favorite was unbeatable; Friday we're putting ourselves in a position to have his horse beat me.

That's the way the game works, right?

Brown saddles Black Sea (8-5) in today's 10-furlong allowance turf feature, but we'll try to upset him with Tathqeef (5-2).

Four-year-old McLaughlin trainee has more upside, better spacing, competitive figures and the aggressive Carmouche should assure he'll be in this throughout.

Taking Tathqeef to win at 2-1 or greater and a exacta box with the favorite.

The New Boss Same as the Old Boss

The place you use it is the place you get it back and it's interesting--some might say boring--that every feature lately seems to boast a Chad Brown-trained favorite that looks clearly best on paper.

Such is the case today with Going for Broke (2-1).

Making her third start this year, she just missed in a rapidly run 7 furlongs at the Spa, a prep that was not enough to stretch out at the Grade 1 level next time out; much too big a leap given the circumstances.

Now she returns to allowance company at a distance at which she's 2-for-2 and also 2-for-3 over this surface.

Taking Going for Broke to win, no price restrictions, keying her in exactas with Tejana (6-1) and Girl Talk (4-1).
