What a Difference, a Length Makes

In today’s feature, the Yaddo Stakes for state-bred fillies and mares going a mile and a sixteenth on the Saratoga turf, all eyes will be on Gitchee Goomie (2-1), and for good reason. Her latest here was a nightmarish journey as she was blocked, forced to angle out wide in deep stretch, finished with a rush but ran out of ground, racing her final quarter in a sub-23 seconds. Consequently, she will likey wind out a heavy favorite.

But in that same race, it wasn’t as if Frivolous Buck (5-1) didn’t have a straw in her path. She had her issues, too, caught between horses through much of the final turn, eventually found a seam, but it was too late: She was beaten a head by the choice. While ‘Gitchee’ has proven consistently faster, the disparity in the odds is the difference here.

Taking Frivolous Buck to win at 9-2 or greater and boxing her in the exacta with the favorite.

All In on Pocket Cowboys

Today’s featured West Point for older state-breds at a mile and a sixteenth on the turf is about the toughest feature to handicap this meeting. I studied long; hope I didn’t study wrong.

There’s so much speed and pressers in this spot and not a proven late runner of this class upon which to hang your handicapping hat, so we’re hoping one of the pressers, Pocket Cowboys (6-1) will get it done.

‘Cowboys’ was second in this race last year at 9 furlongs but at today’s 8.5 furlong trip, the anticipated faster pace and has tactical speed will enable him to trip out given the rider switch to position conscious Castellano. It’s a crapshoot but perhaps the price will justify the risk.

Taking Pocket Cowboys to win at 5-1 or greater and key boxing him in multiples with two classy types; the open graded stakes winning Straight Story (6-1) and the late running Icabad Crane (3-1) who should get a strong pace to suit his late run.

Running Totals: (912) 287-184-128 Total Dollar Return: $1,984.00 [win selections only]

For Bridgetown: What Price Glory?

Today’s Troy Stakes for older sprinters going 5-½ furlongs on turf features a Todd Pletcher trained favorite that will be very hard to bet. Bridgetown (1-1) is 2-for-2 on the surface and distance and he worked sharply for this. However, his recent sojourn to Ascot makes this a difficult read for me and I’m not going to try at the expected short odds.

Awakino Cat (3-1) is a different story. While he’s coming back in only three weeks, he returns to the course over which he’s 4-for-5 in live and an eight time winner at the distance. He’s lost a half step but will likely be rejuvenated by his return to the Spa switching to Ramon.

Taking Awakino Cat to win at 5-2 or greater and key boxing him in multiples with the favorite and Pashito The Che (6-1), last seen in the key race Breeders’ Cup Sprint (3 next out winners) and has won sprinting on turf.

Running Totals: (911) 287-184-127 Total Dollar Return: $1,984.00 [win selections only]
