Conditions Dictate Choices in Belmont Feature

With weather handicappers rating the chances of rain at about 3-5, it's problematic whether today's NX3-optional claimer will remain on the grass. We're betting that because of the nature of the horses, NYRA will try hard to keep it on turf if possible.

If that's the case, I'm not at all sure that the favorite, Filimbi (2-1), can be beaten.

The only time she raced in this country was last month at KEE where her luck went from bad to worse [see replay, Apr 13, race 9]. Roughed up at the start, she had to steady in close quarters, began and finished her rally too late, and was beaten a mere 1/14 lengths in solid time when second to Somali Lemonade, who returned to win a stakes on the Preakness under-card.

Given her good sprint form in Europe, today's one turn mile should suit her style perfectly.

Taking Filimbi to win, no price restrictions, and key-boxing first and second in multiples with course/distance specialist Mariel N Kathy (9-2), and battle tested, McGaughey trainee, Scampering (3-1).
