Surf’s Up at Belmont
As we know from last week's Grade 1 humbling exercise, the best horse on paper sometimes under-performs. From the same barn, we hope that Kauai Kate (1-1) doesn't suffer from the same hangover that afflicted Dream Of July in last Saturday's Mother Goose.
But not only is this Team Pletcher/Velazquez rep consistently fastest on performance figures, she shifts outside--as opposed to racing on the fence like she did in the Acorn--and turns back to a distance at which she's 2-for-2 lifetime. She was no match for Acorn winner Midnight Lucky that day and the runnerup, Close Hatches, returned to win the Mother Goose.
Taking Kauai Kate to win, no price restrictions, an exacta box with uncoupled stablemate Fusaichiswonderful (5-2), and adding Bridgehampton (15-1) and I'm Mom's Favorite (4-1) to the exotics mix.
