If It Weren’t for Bad Luck…
In a rare occurrence, the featured race at Belmont Park—the last one until opening day at the Spa on Friday—is the first race of the day, a secondary allowances on the turf for fillies and mares going a mile on the Widener Turf.
If turf trips mean anything, and they do, then Silvestris deserves a long look to make amends in this spot. Indeed, she is returning on short rest, having raced last Sunday, but the effort could not have been that enervating.
At two critical junctures in that overnight stakes, at the quarter pole and again in deep stretch, Silvestris was trapped, with run, and never had a chance to show what she had in reserve.
In her penultimate try, she had little chance when very aggressively spotted in the Grade 1 Just A Game. It’s time to make amends reuniting with Jose Lezcano, aboard for her dominating score on this course three starts back.
