Handicapping 101: Speed Is Always Dangerous

For a five horse race, the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks sure is contentious. Kentucky Oaks winner Princess of Sylmar makes her return and, if not today, there's always the Alabama next month.

And her uncoupled stable mate, Unlimited Budget, won't have to chase the colts like she did in her last start, the Belmont Stakes.

But at any level, controlling speed is always dangerous and no filly is in better position to lead the group on a merry chase better than My Happy Face (3-1).

Admittedly, her pedigree is on the short side, but her natural speed, pole position and Joel Rosario can conspire to lull the group to sleep. Compensating for her lack of pedigree is her love of Saratoga, where she freaked at 2 to break her maiden by 21 lengths.

Taking My Happy Face to win at 5-2 or greater and an exacta box with Princess Of Sylmar.
