The Lady Is a Champ

Saratoga is one of the world’s few race meets where champions can return on a week day in a race which horses at the championship level are not normally pointed.

The filly is the undefeated champion My Miss Aurelia (2-5) who returns to Saratoga, where she began her career with two victories, to defend her Eclipse title.

Of course, we don’t choose the day’s feature race; it chooses us. It’s either the field featuring the top horse(s) or the race with the highest purse. Horses always trump money with us.

I can make a reasonable case for two of her rivals but in good conscience I can’t find a way to honestly believe that a rival can defeat a dual Grade 1 winner, one that has won at this tricky distance.

Ullapool (8-1) has earned very competitive energy figures this season, including strong 6-furlong Internals in both of her recent starts. Jose Lezcano takes a return call.

Delightful Quality (6-1) has shown talent and laudable versatility in both lifetime starts—an off-the pace effort followed up by a dominant front-running score.

If Ullapool takes it to the favorite early, Delightful Quality could have a puncher’s chance. But even as I write this, I feel it’s a reach.

Best recommendation: use My Miss Aurelia to anchor whatever horizontal wager is your passion and on top in exactas and trifectas with her two contenders here.

Running Totals: (1135) 348-220-171 Total Dollar Return: $2,400.80 [win selections only]
