Mott Runner Will Flat Out Improve
Since its inception as the NYRA Mile, this Grade 1 has always lived up to that kind of status. And so it will again today.
Cases can be made for four horses, probably more, but we'll concentrate on: Groupie Doll (3-1), who might have gotten off to a slow start but appears to still be moving forward.
Then there's Clearly Now (5-1), who has gotten good at the right time--the end of his 3YO--since the addition of blinkers, and Goldencents (7-2), who benefitted from a speedy SA surface but was used hard and pressed hard throughout a two-turn mile from the extreme outside post and was clearly best taking the Dirt Mile.
But it's Flat Out (6-1) who's most intriguing to us. He was doing very well in SoCal leading up to the Classic then raced wide throughout in a tough-trip effort. Having said that, however, he was completely empty in the lane. Should he rebound here, he won't be the first Bill Mott trainee to jump up following a non-effort.
He's not your typical miler type, yet his record is a worthy (5) 2-2-1. He ships in here from Payson--he still must be doing well to log these frequent flyer conditions--and an outside post in a race that promises a contested pace, helps here, plus he gets familiar partner Junior Alvarado back in the boot.
Taking Flat Out to win at 4-1 or great and key-boxing him in multiples with his three rivals listed above.
