South Beach Fave Could Get Whipsawed
Tody's feature race at Gulfstream Park, the South Beach Stakes for fillies and mares on the turf going 7-1/2 furlongs is an interesting one featuring the course loving (9) 4-2-0, win machine (15-for-29 lifetime on grass) Romacaca (3-1). The question is, however, do you beliieve in karma?
As most fans know, Hawthorne has been in the midst of a fighting a deadly Equine Herpes epidemic and, for whatever reason, the favorite has missed some training. Darrin Miller said she's plenty fit and he may be right, or he may be placating owner Frank Calabrese. In a large field at this tricky trip, I'm inclined to pass on the short price.
Instead, we'll opt for Whipsaw City (5-1), whose next defeat on Gufstream turf would be her first in three starts and, to underscore her preference for the ground, she earned a lifetime best performance figure at one mile here, a similar dynamic to today's hybrid trip. Add a :47 4/5B move at Palm Meadows, 3rd fastest of 23 in peer group that week, indicates this miss is live for Team Brown/Castellano.
Taking Whipsaw City to win at 4-1 or greater and keying her first and second in multiples with Romacaca, Hooh Why (15-1) and Frontside (6-1).
