Working Vacation for the Holidays

In today’s Sweetest Chant Stakes at Gulfstream Park, we’re about to take the no-guts, no-glory route. Anyone in the game about five minutes knows that G2 Golden Rod winner Kathmanblu (2-1) is going to be a rough out in her season’s at a short price. And she’s equally effective on turf as on dirt. In fact, never has taken a backward step on the Equiform scale her entire career. Remarkable, really.

But we’re taking Holidaysatthefarm (6-1) to upset the group here. While not quite as fast or accomplished as the favorite, she’s done little wrong, and her best lifetime mark was set on firm turf going this distance at Keeneland last fall.

The three year old Smarty Jones chestnut filly has been working lights out for some time at her winter base in Tampa, yet she shows up at Gulfstream in this salty spot to make her season’s debut. I’ll take that as a very positive sign from trainer Tom Proctor, who taps Jose Lezcano who’s very familiar with this filly. She owns tactical speed and kick in a race that should have a strong pace.

Taking Holidaysatthefarm to win at 9-2 or greater, an exacta box with the favorite, and adding Nina Fever (3-1), Excited (4-1) and price shot Tiger Girl (8-1) to the exotic mix.

Running Totals: (797) 257-165-108 Total Dollar Return: $1,781.30 [win selections only]

Penna’s Horse?  That’s Cool

Wow, an allowance race with possible Kentucky Derby implications. At this point there’s no way to know which of these will emerge as the season lengthens but this much is clear: Cool Blue Red Hot (4-1) is the way to go today.

His one mile debut at Belmont Park in November was first rate, a nose defeat in fast time with excellent energy distribution. He followed that up with a maiden win, his two turn debut, showing improved early speed and he’s come back to train well since.

Angel Penna Jr. is adept at bringing his runners back with this kind of spacing. The switch to Rajiv Maragh is positive as it appears Penna has aspirations with this colt.

Taking Cool Blue Red Hot to win at 5-2 or greater and keying him first and second in multiples with a pair of fast workers; Beamer (6-1) and Dialed In (7-2).

Running Totals: (795) 257-164-108 Total Dollar Return: $1,781.30 [win selections only] {Thursday results not included}

Going Rogue

Today’s turf feature at Gulfstream, a “three other than” optional claimer has drawn a strong a diverse field in various stages of their form cycle, yielding so many potential ways to go.

We will opt on the side of horses for a course and who is racing in raging from right now. The only problem is that Rogue Victory (6-1) is coming back on less than two weeks rest.

But once again there appears to be enough pace to set things up nicely for his late kick, which he demonstrated last out. If Castellano elects, he could also gain some decent early position to make his job that much easier. Then it will be up to the rider to split the seam.

Taking Rogue Victory to win and place at 9-2 or greater.

Running Totals: (794) 256-164-108 Total Dollar Return: $1,777.50 [win selections only] {Wednesday results not included}
