She’s Awesome Baby

Awesome Maria (7-5) is having, well, an awesome 4-year-old season. She’s improved from her promising 3-year-old year, loves the surface and the distance. She’s done it all, except win a Grade 1. Despite toting highweight of 124 pounds, that ends today in the Ogden Phipps.

The filly she and the rest must beat is Breeders’ Cup Distaff champion Unrivaled Belle (2-1), who was the .65-cent favorite to win this race last year but ran into a sharp Todd Pletcher trainer named Life At Ten, who won the Phipps then--you know the rest, right?

For Bill Mott, it will de déjà vu all over again, falling victim to a sharp Pletcher filly.

Taking Awesome Maria, no price restrictions, and a cold exacta with Unrivaled Belle.

Seriously?

Today’s overnight Miss Royal Stakes for three-year-old fillies features a few fillies dropping out of stakes company including the favorite, Roman Treasure (2-1), the fastest filly on recent Equiform figures that beat her elders last out going the always tricky 6-½ furlongs at Parx. Early speed, Dominguez and an outside draw makes her the most likely winner.

But we’ll take the value offered by You’re Kidding (3-1), a maiden breaker going a mile on this track last out and attracting Castellano. Having seen her train at Payson Park, we believe she can sprint and is coming off a series of Equiform patterns; a compression line followed by a reversal and a new pace top. If this isn’t meant as a turf prep next out--she’s bred for it--we like her to upset the group.

Taking You’re Kidding at early line odds or greater, boxing her in the exacta with Roman Treasure.

Running Totals: (876) 276-179-120 Total Dollar Return: $1,917.10 [win selections only]

Hot Connections Likely to Get It Done

The Belmont feature is today’s third race, which only drew a field of five, hence it’s placement, keeping it out of the Pick Six, which is the bad news and good news. This sure is trappy.

Despite the small field and seeming lack of pace, our best guess is that Velazquez and Dominguez will keep such a close eye on each other that the fractions will at least be contested, and that should set things up for a positional type runner.

Early line favorite Arena Elvira (8-5) seems to be that horse. She’s done her best racing at Belmont, and at today’s distance, is nicely drawn outside to keep an eye on the proceeding, and the Mott Lezcano team have been doing good work together in recent months.

Taking Arena Elvira to win, no price restrictions, and key her over the Pletcher-trained uncoupled entry; Ailalea (5-2) and Katy Now (2-1).

Running Totals: (875) 276-179-119 Total Dollar Return: $1,917.10 [win selections only]
