This Filly No Flash In the Pan

When looking at today’s Grade 2 Raven Run at Keeneland, for three-year-old fillies sprinting seven furlongs, it’s very difficult to find a filly that looks healthier on performance figures than Flashing (3-1).

The combination of a barn switch to Saeed bin Suroor and her late developing nature has worked wonders.

There are faster fillies on figures, Just Jenda at 4-1, but none that are as fast and more likely to produce that good form on a synthetic track. Another rival won on Santa Anita’s Pro Ride but ran poorly on Del Mar’s Poly. What to do?

Well, all horses seem to run very well after shipping from Presque Isle’s Tapeta surface and Flashing’s G1 score at Saratoga speaks loudly as to her class. Richard Migliore rides her like he owns her.

Taking Flashing to win at 2-1 or greater, keying her first and second in exacta with Just Jenda and Sky Haven (8-1).

Running Totals: (527) 158-106-76 Total Dollar Return: $1,107.30 [win selections only] {Friday’s results not included}

Potential Over Proven Performance

Today’s feature for fillies and mares three-year-olds and up at a mile and a sixteenth at Belmont Park, the overnight Real Prize Stakes, feature two accomplished fillies in this small group: Bon Jovi Girl (6-5) and Don’t Forget Girl (2-1). But there’s an interesting filly on the come.

Her name is Unrivaled Belle (3-1). She obviously talented, fast enough to compete on performance figures with these given continued improvement and should be able to dictate the early tempo.

Coming off a seven furlong sprint win over the track, she gets Eddie Castro to re-ride after broken her maiden going long in the Garden State two back.

Taking Unrivaled Belle to win at 3-1 or greater, keying her first and second in trifectas with her rivals here.

Running Totals: (526) 157-106-76 Total Dollar Return: $1,100.30 [win selections only]

Proudinsky Stands Tallest

Need to be frank here regarding today’s rescheduled Grade 3 Knickerbocker Stakes. Actually, two things: I remember when this race was a handicap, and today's favorite looks so imposing I don’t think I can beat him and won’t even try.

It’s not so much that he sticks out on class as a graded stakes winner, that he’s been competitive at the G1 level or that the Frankel barn is 4-for-10 at the current meet. Or even that he’s fastest on performance figures by a significant margin.

Rather, it’s the fact that his best efforts and four of his victories have come at today's nine furlong distance, which looks like the key to success in this race.

Contrarians can point to his 0-for-3 record on this course but two of those defeats came at the G1 level. Fresh, he should show his tactical speed, establish good position from the pole, and wait until Javier Castellano gives him his cue.

Taking Proudinsky (9-5) to win, no price restrictions, keying him two ways in exotics with Operation Red Dawn, Brave Tin Soldier and Danak.

Running Totals: (526) 157-106-76 Total Dollar Return: $1,100.30 [win selections only]
