And, in the 2012 Role of Animal Kingdom Is…

Three solid favorites on ability but only one with synthetics experience. Heavy Breathing (3-1) is undefeated in two starts for Pletcher, winning both by impressive margins, one at today’s 9F trip, and pedigree looks very suitable for transition to the AW surface.

Went The Day Well (4-1) also has 9F experience and appears to be a natural router with turf experience in Britain before shipping over for Team Valor. Karma fans will appreciate the fact that this colt gets a switch to Animal Kingdom's partner, Johnny Velazquez

But it's Handsome Mike (4-1) who owns consistently fastest figures on Equiform scale and he's been toughened in four graded stakes. He'ss compromised by a wide draw--the extreme outside in a field of 12--but not the presence of Joel Rosario, Santa Anita's leading rider shipping in to ride the Doug O'Neill trainee.

Taking Handsome Mike to win at 3-1 or greater and key boxing him first and second in multiples, adding Mr. Prankster (12-1) off a bounce-rebound pattern switching to Rosie, and Ill Conceived (8-1), who stayed very gamely after pace battle in the Battaglia Memorial prep, to the super-exotic mix.

Running Totals: (1049) 325-204-154 Total Dollar Return: $2,239.60 [win selections only]

Casper Lives!

I hate doing this, as I’m not a believer that a top-figure horse can bounce and still beat today’s field school, but frankly I can’t get past Abdel’s Ghost (5-2).

He loves the surface as a three-time winner, he’s won 5 of 13 starts--with 5 exacta finishes--at the distance, has won from the pole position, blew out very sharply at his Calder base.

Further, he’s won with this kind of 4-weeks spacing and Rajiv Maragh rides him like he owns him. Gerald Procino doing fine work with this sprinter.

Taking Abdel’s Ghost to win at 8-5 or greater and key boxing him in multiples with classy turf-to-dirt Phillippe (4-1) and freshened Shrewd One (6-1).

Running Totals: (1048) 324-204-154 Total Dollar Return: $2,233.80 [win selections only]

Take the Hot Jock in Rider’s Race

Today’s Gulfstream Park feature is a preliminary allowances for 3-year-old fillies going 1-1/16th miles. Given that it’s a six horse field and the finish line is up the stretch for the standard finish line, this will turn into one of those “rider’s races;” always dangerous.

So in addition to one of the fastest fillies in the group on the Equiform scale, comes off a willing and troubled third in her Gulfstream debut and picks up a rider pushing all the right buttons of late, Julien Leparoux.

Goldrush Girl (3-1), half of the Ken McPeek uncoupled entry, looks like she has the best chance in this group as her line looks explosive as she’s poised to move forward to a career best effort. Today’s stretchout back to a two-turn trip suits perfectly.

Taking Goldrush Girl to win at 5-2 or greater and key boxing her with Awesome Girl (4-1) and Woodford Lady, the other McPeek filly exiting a race that produced two next out winners.

Running Totals: (1047) 323-204-154 Total Dollar Return: $2,229.40 [win selections only]
