Give Me Liberty

Today’s Spa feature is the G1 Spinaway for juvenile fillies going seven furlongs. Of the eight fillies entered, Todd Pletcher will saddle half of them, including the first, second and third choices. Instead, we’ll go the for gusto with Coax Liberty (15-1).

When last seen here, she was finishing a distant third with a game finish rally behind Limit Position, one of the most impressive young fillies we’ve seen this season.

Owning three races worth of experience, coming up to the added distance nicely, and with plenty of early gas here, she deserves a chance to upset the group after maintaining her sharpness with a brisk work at her Maryland base.

Taking Coax Liberty to win at 12-1 or greater and keying her in all money positions with all the Pletcher ladies.

Running Totals: (723) 237-150-97 Total Dollar Return: $1,643.50 [win selections only] {Saturday results not included}

There’s No Substitute for Quality

It doesn’t take a genius to figure that Quality Road, who was not at his sharpest when nailed by Blame in the shadow of the Whitney wire. He will make amends here.

And so we’ll take him to win with no price restrictions but since the odds will be prohibitive, the play is a straight exacta: Quality Road with late developing 4-year-old gelding Indian Dance (20-1), making second start off the layup and working well at his Laurel base.

Running Totals: (723) 237-150-97 Total Dollar Return: $1,643.50 [win selections only]

Anticipating Powhatan County

Today’s Spa feature is the G3 With Anticipation for juvenile colts going 1-1/16 miles on the Mellon course and a vexing puzzle it is.

Typhoon Slew broke his maiden laughing but set a soft pace at Ellis Park to do so. Lou Brissie has graded stakes experience, wants to go long, worked well on turf but has never competed on it. Grigio came from the clouds with blinkers added and was beaten a nose. Sensational Slam went 2-for-2 on Woodbine Poly now tries turf.

But we’re going to keep this simple and take Powhatan County. After breaking maiden under these conditions earlier at the meet, he shipped to Monmouth and finished fourth following a wide and rough trip, placed third following a rival’s disqualification.

While turning back with tougher, his figures improved despite his trip now returns to the Spa and reunites with Castellano from a cozy inside slip.

Taking Powhatan County to win at 2-1 or greater and keying him first and second in multiples with his rivals here.

Running Totals: (721) 236-149-97 Total Dollar Return: $1,633.10 [win selections only] {Thursday results not included}
