Main Speed Capable of Suburban Upset

Today’s Grade 2 Suburban apparently is a handicap in name only. Six horses ALL carry 115 pounds; what a coincidence.

Anyway, the two favorites, Rodman (8-5) and Hymn Book (5-2) are coming off big efforts. Of the two, I would prefer Hymn Book to regress a little less.

The value in here appears to be Colizeo (5-1), who might shake free under an aggressive Cornelio Velasquez, as the Pletcher trainee loses Johnny to Shug’s well positioned Hymn Book. Unlike the favorites, Colizeo looks poised for a forward move on the stretchout to a more favorable distance.

Taking Colizeo to win at 7-2 or greater and keying him first and second in multiples with Hymn Book and oft-disappointing Convocation (6-1) who’s been pointed to this spot and picks up Dominguez.

Running Totals: (883) 278-180-120 Total Dollar Return: $1,924.00 [win selections only] {Friday results not included}

Celluloid Heroes Never Really Die

Until it’s made official, why not try to turn this race, the Sky Beauty, into a graded event one day. Just a thought.

Of the two fillies dropping out of he Grade 2 Shuvee won by the 4-for-4 4-year-old Awesome Maria, we prefer R Betty Graybull (5-2) to likely favorite Happy Week (3-1), even if the early line is a counter-indicator.

Scratched from a tougher stakes event recently awaiting this, “Betty” has a history of good race-bad race. Today she’s in line to throw a good one over her favorite surface where she’s won three of nine starts in five exacta finishes.

She comes from a live race and barn that owns a 3-for-6 slate in non-graded stakes. Nicely drawn toward the outside in this small competitive field, she’ll come running late beneath Eddie Castro who’s taking a return call here.

Taking R Betty Graybull to win at early line odds or better and keying her in multiples with Happy Week, Satans Quick Chick (7-2) who usually runs well going from synthetics to dirt, and the improved Distorted Legacy (5-1), a much improved winner over weaker in her recent Belmont Park debut.

Running Totals: (883) 278-180-120 Total Dollar Return: $1,924.00 [win selections only]

Sleeping Beauty Lives!

Today’s feature, a secondary allowances optional claiming for fillies and mares going a mile on the Widener turf course, appears long on early speed but with horses in varying stages of development, making this a difficult read and virtually impossible to take a short price on whichever filly you fancy.

We’ll reach out for Awakened Beauty (6-1) who’s won both her turf starts at Belmont, has been versatile in both wins, is bred for distance on dam’s side and attracts Castellano, 5-for-11 through Wednesday when riding for Bruce Brown, himself a career flat-bet profit with first-time runners going long.

The filly is not as fast as her rivals here, but she’s never has taken a backward step on the Equiform scale in three grass starts.

Taking Awakened Beauty to win at 4-1 or greater and boxing her in the exacta with the speedy Bailzee (8-1) breaking from the pole position and dropping from a restricted stakes.

Running Totals: (883) 278-180-120 Total Dollar Return: $1,924.00 [win selections only]
