Taking Lubash, a Real Hoochie Coocher

Today’s feature, the New York bred Stallion Stakes, Cab Calloway division, might not be all that glamorous but it’s an interesting betting race nonetheless with horses in various states of accomplishment and development. Of those, two favorites have earned their rolls but one offers better value.

Seattle Mission (2-1) usually fires his best shot but he’s had no excuses in some of those, including his recent return to Saratoga. The good news is that he gets a switch to Ramon Dominguez; the bad is that he’s saddled with a tough, outside draw.

Lubash (3-1) also gets a rider switch, a more significant one to Kent Desormeaux who rides the Spa turf especially well, has a cozy inside draw, tactical speed, can finish and earns the best figures among these with consistency. It is this Jim Ryerson trainee who would be the more deserving favorite.

Taking Lubash to win at 2-1 or greater and an exacta box with Seattle Mission.

Running Totals: (703) 227-144-97 Total Dollar Return: $1,582.50 [win selections only]

Changing Skies Goes All the Waya

Today’s feature for older fillies and mares at 12 furlongs on the grass is the Waya Stakes, an overnighter attracting a field of nine. The bad news is that it’s hard to imagine anyone other than early favorite Changing Skies (9-5) winding up in the charmed circle.

Tested in graded company, she passed muster, winning the G3 The Very One with seconds in the Bewitch and G2 New York Handicap. Reuniting with Kent Desormeaux and stretching out to a marathon, her best distance, she owns versatility and has no preference for any particular type of footing. Her half-mile breeze in :48 4/5 will have her in this from the start.

Taking Changing Skies with no price restrictions, keying her in the multiples with Casablanca Style (2-1) and Ballynoe (12-1).

Running Totals: (702) 226-144-97 Total Dollar Return: $1,578.00 [win selections only]

Lots of Big Drama in Today’s Vanderbilt

Today’s feature is a beauty, the Grade 1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt at six furlongs. Obviously, there are some extremely fast horses in this matchup, principally Gayego (4-1), Big Drama (3-1) and Simply perfection (3-1).

The class of the field, in terms of accomplishment is G1 winner Bribon, the Met Mile hero.

Our perseverance is for Big Drama. Four-for-four at the distance and consistently fast, if not fastest, the only thing lacking on his resume is a Grade 1. By no means will this be easy, but that drought ends today.

Big Drama has all the tools needed. He’s a weight carrier, has enough tactical speed to get into the mix naturally, can kick, and comes in toting bullets for a trainer that’s profitable lifetime with repeaters. ‘Drama’ won the recent G2 Smile on Calder’s Summit of Speed program.

Taking Big Drama to win at 5-2 or greater and keying him first and second in exactas with his rivals listed here.

Running Totals: (701) 226-143-97 Total Dollar Return: $1,578.00 [win selections only]
