Track Condition Could Prove Key in Big A Feature

The feature that begins the Aqueduct fall meeting is the overnight Proud Truth, named for a Breeders’ Cup Classic winner, the only time that event was held in Queens, New York.

It’s a little five-horse trap with horses in various stages of development, no true speed type and five top riders. Tactics and trip wins this one, a race expected to be contested over a wet track.

Denver (3-1) is in the best position to take advantage of the above conditions. He owns tactical speed, draws the pole with position-conscious Johnny V., and meets horses far more suited to his talented than he’s been facing recently.

But Retriever (2-1) has better performance figures and is at his best at today's longer distance, significantly better. The negative is that he might be up against it on a wet racetrack. It's a tough call.

Taking Retriever to win, no price restrictions, and boxing him in the exacta with Denver.

Solid Like Banrock

The final race at Belmont Park, rescheduled from yesterday’s New York Showcase card, features this year’s star of the state-bred ranks, the venerable Banrock (7-5).

Wind him up and he runs fast; keep winding and you’ll bring out all of his class. This is simply one of those horses that refuse to lose.

Add in the fact that nine furlongs hits him between the eyes, he handles any ground and an outside post could actually help in what is expected to be boggy conditions, he becomes, at paper at least, unbeatable to me.

Taking Banrock to win, no price restrictions, and one-way exotics with Kutais (8-1) and Pennington (7-2).

Running Totals: (529) 159-106-76 Total Dollar Return: $1,114.30 [win selections only]

This Filly No Flash In the Pan

When looking at today’s Grade 2 Raven Run at Keeneland, for three-year-old fillies sprinting seven furlongs, it’s very difficult to find a filly that looks healthier on performance figures than Flashing (3-1).

The combination of a barn switch to Saeed bin Suroor and her late developing nature has worked wonders.

There are faster fillies on figures, Just Jenda at 4-1, but none that are as fast and more likely to produce that good form on a synthetic track. Another rival won on Santa Anita’s Pro Ride but ran poorly on Del Mar’s Poly. What to do?

Well, all horses seem to run very well after shipping from Presque Isle’s Tapeta surface and Flashing’s G1 score at Saratoga speaks loudly as to her class. Richard Migliore rides her like he owns her.

Taking Flashing to win at 2-1 or greater, keying her first and second in exacta with Just Jenda and Sky Haven (8-1).

Running Totals: (527) 158-106-76 Total Dollar Return: $1,107.30 [win selections only] {Friday’s results not included}
