The Devil Made Me Do It

Today’s Saratoga feature is really a great matchup, protem divisional leading Californian, Blind Luck (8-5), vs. the East’s most accomplished 3-year-old filly, Devil May Care (7-5).

Given the pace dynamics and the benefit of a recent race over the track, a victory in the Coaching Club American Oaks, extending her Spa record to 2-for-2, Devil May Care is the deserving early line favorite and most probable winner.

Considering Blind Luck is 8-for-12 in her career, including four Grade 1s, that’s saying a lot.

Taking Devil May Care to win, no price restrictions, and keying her first and second in exactas with Blind Luck and Havre de Grace, narrowly beaten by Blind Luck in her graded stakes debut, the Delaware Oaks.

Running Totals: (712) 232-146-97 Total Dollar Return: $1,603.40 [win selections only]

You Go Bet Girl

Today’s Saratoga feature is the female version of yesterday’s West Point, the Yaddo for fillies and mares 3 & up at nine furlongs.

On paper, the three shortest prices on the overnight line have the best chance and all are in with a good chance. It’s a matter of which variable you settle on.

We’ll eliminate Meriwether Jessica (5-1) from the top spot even if she had a strong and sharp recent because she’s not run this far, is not particularly bred for it and has not had success on this surface.

Chestoria (3-1) and You Go West Girl (4-1) come out of the same Spa two turner and each had a tough trip. While the former had a tougher trip in terms of trouble encountered, the latter had a far more difficult chore, trying to out kick Chestoria while racing wide behind a slow pace.

Taking You Go West Girl to win at 3-1 or greater and keying her first and second with her two main rivals here.

Running Totals: (711) 232-145-97 Total Dollar Return: $1,603.40 [win selections only]

Straight Story is the Truth

Today’s Saratoga feature is the West Point on turf at 9 furlongs for New York breds, 3-year-olds and up and it’s attracted a field a talented horses, headed by Straight Story (5-2), Banrock (3-1) and Minnie Punt (9-2).

My first inclination is to box them up as good cases can be made for all. The latter was severely compromised by a dawdling pace in an open class stakes at Monmouth last out. Old pro Banrock has won half his six starts at Saratoga with two seconds and is a six-time winner at the distance.

But Straight Story has grown into a force at 4, even in open company, and, in fact, mid-moved, reaching even terms for the lead in the 11-furlong, Grade 1 United Nations only to get grabbed from behind by a talented Euro type, beaten two lengths for it all. Previously came two open length victories vs. state-breds at today’s distance at Belmont Park.

Taking Straight Story to win at 8-5 or greater and keying him first and second in multiple with his two rivals listed here.

Running Totals: (710) 231-145-97 Total Dollar Return: $1,599.30 [win selections only]
