Weight Shift and Rider Switch Rules at the Shore

Taking a look at one of two Monmouth Park features today, the Lighthouse Stakes for fillies and mares going a mile and a sixteenth.

Making the mini-stretchout to the distance at which she's won half her six starts, Successful Song (7-2) and switching to Joe Bravo, the 4-year-old Successful Appeal filly, benefits from a weight switch with her major contenders and is bred to handle any footing.

Eddie Plesa trainee owns the tactical speed to be in this throughout and enough kick to get the job done. Taking Successful Song to win at 2-1 or greater.

Running Totals: (881) 278-180-120 Total Dollar Return: $1,924.00 [win selections only]

Recency Rules

Today’s Belmont Park feature is scheduled for the turf, problematical at this point, at 1-1/16 miles for three year olds and up, optional claiming-“two other than” allowances. It features just about everything; shippers, layups, class droppers, recent claims, etc. We’ll cut to the chase and take the sharp six year old Rogue Victory.

Claimed by sharp connections after winning his last over this course by the Steve Asmussen barn, this guy handles any course condition, he’s a three time winner at the distance, has tactical speed and kick, and retains Ramon Dominguez.

Taking Rogue Victory to win at 2-1 or greater.

Running Totals: (880) 278-180-120 Total Dollar Return: $1,924.00 [win selections only]

And Sophia Shall Lead Them

If the size of the purse is a measure--and it is--today’s feature race completes the early double. In its zeal to boost handle in the late Pick 4, will the association continue to run these races earlier and earlier on the program. What’s next for the supposed best horses on the card, betless exhibitions?

Clearly Sophia (9-5) has some issues, this being only the seventh lifetime start for the five year old. But the good news this is her third start this year and she’s coming back on three weeks rest. The inference is that she must be doing very well.

What may seem like a lot of shipping might only be a series of preps. Based at Fair Hill, Steve Klesaris has shipped her to Charles Town and Delaware now shows up here dropping into a second allowances-optional claimer for $50,000. Looming the main speed with an outside draw in a small field, go-to rider David Cohen is named. She can handle any footing.

Taking Sophia to win at early line odds and keying her in exacta boxes with fast working Summer Laugh (2-1), from the hot Pletcher-Velazquez team, and Malibu Moon Dance (6-1), a distance specialist working swiftly at her base for a good ship-in barn adept with layups.

Running Totals: (879) 277-180-120 Total Dollar Return: $1,920.40 [win selections only]
