Watch Out, Bogey at 5:17!

There’s an old saw on the racetrack that the place you lose it is the place you get it back. But sometimes, you get it then get it back again. That’s our goal in today’s Grade 3 Jaipur at 6 furlongs on the inner turf course.

The favorites here, Stradivinski (2-1) and Formidable (9-5) are, well, formidable.

Stradivinski has had more than enough recovery time from a lifetime top effort, which is the co-fastest turf-sprint figure in the race and goes first time for Rick Dutrow. But 5 furlongs seems to be his best game and he might meet some pace pressure in here.

The same can be said about Formidable. He, too, has posted fast turf sprint figures, but also at 5 furlongs and actually has run faster on dirt. He wants to be a pace factor, as does Stradivinski and Our Friend Harvey, who should also contribute lively fractions.

All this helps Yield Bogey (6-1), who has found his niche sprinting on turf. He’s a stretch-running sprinter and today’s conditions suit him very well. He was a sharp winner of his last under similar conditions and owns a sharp subsequent blowout for his return. The promise of fair odds makes him a tempting play here.

Taking Yield Bogey to win at 4-1 or greater and keying him first and second in the multiples with the speedy favorites.

Running Totals: (689) 221-140-96 Total Dollar Return: $1,547.70 [win selections only]

Yes, It’s Close To The Edge

While today’s third at Belmont is technically the day’s feature, we’re going to take a pass. A five horse race with two trainers starting two uncoupled runners is not our idea of interesting. However, the eighth race, a 7-furlong turf sprint, is a lot closer to what we had in mind.

Early line favorite Manhattan Fox (8-5) is going to be an extremely tough out. Owning excellent performance figures and from a barn, Chris Clement’s, that’s a profitable 25 percent effective with its turn back and attracting the hot Cornelio Velasquez, it's no wonder, This team has been doing excellent work of late.

Ezzy (5-2) is interesting, too, having won a secondary allowances vs. state-breds now trying preliminary allowances in open company, is super sharp and working purposefully.

Close To The Edge (7-2) clearly is the most interesting. A winner at this distance on synthetics, this lightly raced youngster showed promise in its turf debut, beaten only 1-½ wile trying stakes company.

That spot indicates that the Trombetta barn believes he has a turf performer on his hands and the colt came back to work brilliantly at his Monmouth base for this. No other than Ramon Dominguez takes the mount. It won't be easy but the reward should be fair.

We’re taking Close To The Edge to win at 3-1 or greater, keying him first and second in the exacta with the favorite, adding Ezzy to the trifecta mix.
