It’s Not Dreamin If You Can Do It

The Halfmoon overnight Stakes is far from compelling and appears to have been written with Mr. Zito in mind. He has half the field, three of the six entered, and two are coupled. The three, combined are the first two choices on the early line.

The only conceivable value is a sharp four-year-old from lower profile connections who’s fast, gets along well with her rider, likes this surface and the distance. At 7-2, Are We Dreamin looks like a viable value play. A winner of her last, she’s goes again for trainer Randi Persaud, who sports a lofty 32 percent strike rate given that scenario.

A tactical speedster, she breaks in the middle of the pack and that can give Rajiv Maragh options. He’ll need that versatility as we’re sure Zito will devise a running style for his three fillies that would insure victory for one of them. With the exception of Are We Dreamin, the form in this group is a little spotty.

Taking Are We Dreamin to win at 3-1 or greater, no multiple-pool wagers.

Running Totals: (263) 81-51-30. Total Dollar Return: $489.40 [win selections only]

You Go to the Windows People

If it’s about class on the grass, which it is, that and trips, two fillies in today’s Mollie Wilmot overnight stakes, are getting plenty of class relief, Rewrite (5-2) and You Go West Girl (3-1). And if it’s about value, which it always must be, then the second choice on the early line is value; You Go West Girl should be the right favorite.

Having said that, Rewrite is impossible to fault. She seldom fails to fire her best shot, is not limited by distance and her performance figures are among the fastest in the race. She could not be in better hands than with turf ace Christophe Clement.

But You Go West Girl is just as versatile and while she isn’t 4-for-5 at today’s distance, as is Rewrite, she is 2-for-3, went well in her only start over this ground and has proven consistently faster. The four-year-old has come to hand this season and Tom Proctor is no less a turf ace than Clement.

Taking You Go West Girl to win at 5-2 or greater and an exacta box with Rewrite.

Running Totals: (262) 81-51-30. Total Dollar Return: $489.40 [win selections only]

Take Goodday, Mates

With two overnight stakes to choose from, the more compelling is for juvenile New York-bred fillies, the Vichy, going six furlongs. Interesting race in that it’s a battle between some fillies that have tried open company and some that were impressive maiden winners. We’ll take a closer look at Ouchy Night (5-1), Stunning Electra (4-1) and Goodday (4-1).

After breaking her maiden, Ouchy Night was asked to carry her speed in the Grade 3 Schuylerville. Nothing doing; too much, too soon. Now it’s back to state-breds, Desormeaux gets the re-ride, and the filly’s worked twice since her last, in which she also stumbled and raced wide. She’ll certainly improve here.

Stunning Electra was all that in her second start, showing much more speed than in her tough trip debut, winning over a wet Saratoga track in a manner that was easier than her winning margin suggests. The Asmussen barn sent her back to Belmont but when this spot came up, they sent her back up the Northway. The fact that Belmont fall is now a little more than a week away, she seems very well intended in this spot.

Goodday is the most interesting. While her performance figures are not at the level of the fastest of these, they are promising in that she has improved incrementally making her highly likely to move forward again. Add to that, the fact he will be making her first start for trainer Rick Dutrow, a 32 percent scenario, and transitions from Del Mar Polytrack to dirt, she might think she’s taking flight. Evidence of that came when in her final work, she went five furlongs in :59, the fastest of 73 two-year-olds to work that week in Saratoga.

Taking Goodday to win at 5-2 or greater and exacta boxes with her two rivals here.

Running Totals: (261) 80-51-30. Total Dollar Return: $485.10 [win selections only]
