Class Will Tell

It's unfortunate when the "best horse" is carrying a heavy package in a prep race but you can't honestly say you're comfortable trying to beat him: That's the case with Belmont winner Tonalist (8-5) in today's Grade 2 Jim Dandy, the quintessential Travers prep.

Even with Christophe Clement admitting that while his colt is very fit, he's left something in the tank for next time. But the problem is that he has all the versatility to handle any pace scenario, he can kick, owns the fastest energy figures, and he's proven at the highest level.

Taking Tonalist to win, no price restrictions, and an exacta box with price shot Legend (12-1) and the newly blinkered Wicked Strong (2-1.

Buona Sera Cugini

The first of two Travers preps this weekend is today's Curlin Stakes for 3YO going 9 furlongs. There's no shortage of graded stakes-tested runners here, including Derby runner-up Commanding Curve but we'll take any value offered on Cousin Stephen.

Chad Brown trainee was looking like a possible classics contender but instead, after a brief freshening, returned at Parx with an extremely game score after being severely tested in the lane. Now he stretches out to his most effective distance, showing good development. The spacing is right and the switch to Johnny certainly doesn't hurt.

Taking Cousin Stephen to win at 4-1 or greater, an exacta box with Commanding Curve, and adding Protonico, Life In Shambles and Charge Now to the super-exotics mix.

No Escaping Experience

The problem with today's featured Quick Call at Saratoga at 5-1/2 furlongs on the turf is that the "best horses" have not run on the grass. Taking our best hold, we'll stick with experience.

Escapist (8-1) is 2-for-2 in life on turf, overcoming a gate incident to win his 5F debut and then showing gameness when challenged late in a 6F Belmont allowances. The spacing is right and he appears to have the best blend of speed and stamina to withstand what figures to be a wicked pace. At least we'll be compensated nicely to find out.

Taking Escapist to win at 5-1 or greater and key-boxing exactas with a turf debut types from a top grass barn [Clement], and productive first-turf barn [Preciado]; Pure Sensation (3-1) and Favorite Tale (5-2).
