You had the right idea all along but fell into the same trap as I did.
Of course, checking twice midway of a 5 furlong turf race is not usually a path to riches.

If I didn’t know what an honest game this is, I would have said the “fix” was in, but I have always had a love/hate relationship with 5 furlong and 1-1/2 mile races. Skylander, there can be only one.
