With a fortnight to Saratoga, the NYRA racing week begins with a preliminary allowances for fillies and mares sprinting six furlongs. Probably half this field will end up winning a small stakes somewhere, maybe more.

We’ll concentrate on two: favorite City Bird (8-5) and Pulpitina (5-1).

While she never has returned to her top effort at 3, any performance figure resembling it would make her the winner here--by many lengths. She can stalk from close range, has done her best racing on this surface and should benefit from her recent season’s debut. Coming back six weeks fresh for Rick Dutrow and Edgar Prado makes her a tough out here.

Pulpitina is the only potential value in this field. Her start two back was competitive and the promise of a wet track (thunderstorms predicted) can only help, as will her three-year-old debut. As a three-year-old, she gets five pounds from her older rival, Christophe Clement’s horses usually run well second time off the layup and the filly switches to the white hot Alan Garcia.

Taking the value on Pulpitina at 4-1 or greater and an exacta box with favorite City Bird.
