A half dozen of New York’s best older sprinters are lining up for today’s Grade 2 Tom Fool at 7 furlongs. But it appears that two of them, Not For Money (5-2) and Lucky Island (2-1), a pair who have come into their own at 4, will dominate the tote action and vie for the lion’s share of the purse.

If Lucky Island repeats his latest effort, a top figure score over the track two months ago, he’ll be a tough out. But that’s problematical. While he has won at today’s distance, his best performance figure was earned at six furlongs. Given that it was his third consecutive significant forward move, it’s difficult to project he can even repeat.

Not so for Not For Money. While his last was a career best, it came at today’s specialized distance and six weeks should be sufficient recovery time to recharge those batteries. He showed much improved energy distribution on that occasion, hinting that a repeat is not only possible but probable. The three pounds he receives from his main rival here, given the match-up, is not inconsequential.

Taking Not For Money to win at 8-5 or greater.
