Taking the Guidette in the Belmont Feature

Interesting feature at Belmont Park if one can get passed the favorite. And it just might be possible to hang on one Bahama Bound (7-5), clearly the fastest female here on performance figures, accomplished at the distance and moving forward in condition.

But she’s been known to beat herself with issues at the starting gate. She was taken up in her debut on turf then broke poorly in two subsequent dirt starts. But she can run and is reunited with Javier Castellano.

Certainly, Jersey Shore Girl (6-1) is more interesting. Coming from a pair of Gulfstream sprints, she raced with the pace and stayed on very gamely at seven-eighths two starts back then came roaring home late after being virtually eliminated in her latest at six furlongs.

Trainer Rick Sacco has been very live recently, his filly has the pedigree and style for today’s added distance and the switch to smooth riding Alan Garcia augurs well in this competitive spot. As much as anything, this appears to be a rider’s race.

Taking Jersey Shore Girl to win at 4-1 or greater and boxing her in the exacta with Bahama Bound. Trifecta players can add Hurricanette (5-1) and Reprieve (6-1) to the mix.

Running Totals: (644) 204-129-90 Total Dollar Return: $1,420.80 [win selections only]

Baffert Filly Key to Churchill Carryover

With a Pick 6 carryover of nearly $1-million, we decided to give the feature at Churchill Downs a look and found a worthy favorite in the Bob Baffert trainee, KimmyV (5-2). She the fastest filly on performance figures, worked a bullet before leaving Santa Anita and has continued her fast trials here.

The last, in fact, five furlongs in 1:00 3/5, termed breezing, was sixth fastest of 63 at the distance for four-year-olds that week at Churchill. She has the speed to stalk, the power to kick home and is nicely drawn outside at the distance in this compact field. Shawn Bridgmohan takes the ride.

The stoutest competition is likely to come from Quick Breeze (4-1) who tuned up for this sprinting at Delta Downs. At 2, she raced well in her lone appearance at Churchill despite her wide trip behind Katy Now, a filly with some ability. ‘Breeze’ has had four weeks since the Delta race and David Carroll’s horses have come out running at the young meet.

But compelled to take the fast KimmyV, no price restrictions, and an exacta box with Quick Breeze. Exacta players can add Middlemarch (6-1), reuniting with Calvin, that team winning here last year, and the speedy Mississippi Martini, shipping in from Oaklawn for Lynn Whiting.

Running Totals: (643) 203-129-90 Total Dollar Return: $1,417.00 [win selections only]
