Speed + Stamina = Winning Entry

Today’s Big A feature is the Gravesend Handicap, a highly contentious meeting of some of the Northeast’s fastest sprinters. For me, the problem is that Todd Pletcher holds a strong hand with the Mike Repole entry, rated 9-5 on the early line, and they loom the most likely winners.

Driven By Success certainly needs no introduction. He’s a three-time winner at the distance, has won on the winter track, and the speedy race shape suits his late-run style.

And the horse he might be running down late is his mate, Calibrachoa, who is capable of setting or pressing the pace, gets weight as a late-season three-year-old, and breezed sharply recently for his first start off a rare Pletcher claim. Nicely positioned, David Cohen suits this runner’s style perfectly.

Taking the Repole entry to win, no price restrictions, and keying either or both first and second with the extremely hard hitting Endless Circle and the improved late developer, Jack On The Rocks.

Fugitive Makes Good

Today’s Aqueduct feature is the Jena Jena overnight stakes for stat-bred fillies and mares, 3 & up, going a mile and 70 yards on the winter oval. And an interesting one it is.

There’s no question that Shine Upon, 5-2, is sharp now and returns to the surface over which she is undefeated at 2-for-2. Further, one of those victories came at today’s distance.

But it’s the uncoupled mate, Karakorum Fugitive, 4-1, that peaks our interest. Interesting that David Cohen presumably had his choice of mounts but opted for this miss, whose spacing coming up to this is more desirably. Further, she also is a two-time winter track winner who should enjoy a covered up trip chasing the speed from close range. Her mate came out of the Iroquois to win her last start, why not this miss?

Taking Karakorum Fugitive to win at 3-1 or greater and keying her first and second in multiples with her mate and Spa City Princess, 12-1, another winter track lover who broke her maiden going two turns here last winter.

Running Totals: (777) 248-161-107 Total Dollar Return: $1,729.10 [win selections only]

Get the Cash with Revenue

Despite another small field, today’s co-featured Sky Beauty overnight stakes is an interesting, competitive heat where trips should make all the difference.

Even with five fillies, this race is not short of early speed which should give an advantage to tactical runners. That most likely will be Revenue (3-1), one of two uncoupled runners for Rick Dutrow.

After breaking her maiden by daylight for Lance Stokes at Presque Isle, she wound up in Dutrow’s shed and finished second while moving up in class and distance in one of these overnighters at Belmont Park.

Hitting the slip at the break, she got away last and found herself last in the early running--this after breaking her maiden on the lead. Despite the circumstances, the Exchange Rate filly showed enough courage to out finish all but the runaway winner.

Subsequently, she has worked very well over this, her home base, and picks up position conscious Rajiv Maragh, the team breaking from the pole in this short field. We look for her in a pocket-rocket performance.

Taking Revenue to win at 5-2 or greater.
