Taking What the Game Gives You

Today’s Belmont feature, the Brooklyn Handicap and start of the Brooklyn-Belmont double, offers little opportunity for value, such are the merits of last year’s Belmont winner, Drosselmeyer (6-5).

He showed enough improvement in his second start at 4 to earn a soft win in his return to Belmont, auguring well for another forward move.

And what could be better for a Mott trainee than a stretchout to what is, to date, his best distance; his Belmont Stakes figure being his lifetime best?

Sometimes you’re forced to take what they give you. Taking Drosselmeyer to win with no price restrictions and keying him in the Brooklyn-Belmont double with Nehro and Shackleford.

Running Totals: (873) 276-178-119 Total Dollar Return: $1,917.10 [win selections only]

Where the Winner Meets the Road

Though it’s something most players don’t associate with, Todd Pletcher will drop horses to win, such is the case with Blues Street (9-5). Fully realize this is a 7 year old but the drop into a claimer with a horse that still competitive in graded company seems a bit much. We’re looking elsewhere.

Like Asphalt (2-1),making hi first start for trainer Chad Brown. Coming off a lifetime best, which clearly is good enough to win here, he’s been given sufficient recovery time with the barn change and he’s been working rapidly for his return. A good third to the streaking Little Mike, the 4 year old looks well spotted with this group.

Taking Asphalt to win at 8-5 or greater and an exacta box with the sharp Alyarf (4-1)

Running Totals: (873) 276-178-119 Total Dollar Return: $1,917.10 [win selections only]

Just Wild About Marie

Very competitive turf sprint for fillies and mares going 6 furlongs, the Nonsuch Bay.

Without a speed burner in here, a filly with good performance figures and tactical speed at shorter distances could work well in this spot.

That’s why we’re taking any value offered with Wild About Marie (4-1) who was very competitive with some fast fillies at the Fair Grounds.

With the stretchout to 6 furlongs and a comfy outside draw, he should always be in position to blow this one open with a well timed mid-race move from Maragh.

Taking the quick working 4 year old to win at 4-1 or greater and keying her first and second in multiples with Karakorum Electra and Rose Catherine.

Running Totals: (873) 276-178-119 Total Dollar Return: $1,917.10 [win selections only]
