Sophia Is One Fresh Filly

An interesting non-winners of 3 allowances despite the short field at Parx with questionable track conditions owning to a forecast of possible snow showers.

Each of the six have the credentials to win this but none are without warts, whether the filly is turning back with quicker, or coming back too soon, not fitting the race shape, etc., etc.

While she obviously has issues, having run four times now as a late season 4-year-old, Sophia (4-1) has much going for her. Her pace figures, while not dominant, are superior to the group, looming her as the speed of the speed and her final figures are competitive.

Further, she’s 3-for-4 lifetime, one for one over the ground, and she won both her maiden and off a year’s layoff, indicating the time to get her is when she’s fresh. Add to that the fact trainer Steve Klesaris is a very worthy 27 percent with layups of 90 days or longer and it all adds up.

Taking Sophia to win at 5-2 or greater, and keying her first and second in multiples with Bernadette’s Song (2-1) and Weeper (6-1).

Running Totals: (777) 248-161-107 Total Dollar Return: $1,729.10 [win selections only]

Cowboy Up in Queens County

Today’s Queens County has a small but interesting field, providing an opportunity to beat the favorite(s).

There are two choices of which Modern Cowboy (5-2) looms the most probable winner. As a late developing three-year-old, this horse keeps marching forward and, despite the rise in class, there’s no reason for that trend to stop here.

Owning tactical speed and kick and nicely drawn in this short field given the pace dynamics, I expect Johnny V. will sit covered up behind the speed until ready.

And, as this is mid-December, getting at least six pounds from the major contenders is not insignificant. Todd Pletcher seldom gets overly aggressive and when he shows confidence, as he is doing here, expect a strong effort.

Taking Modern Cowboy to win at 2-1 or better and key boxing him first and second in exactas and trifectas with sharp, New Pace Top Seniors Pride (8-1) and the classy Arson Squad (8-5) from the rail for Dutrow and Dominguez.

Neon Lights Are Bright

Hate when things appear to be this cut and dry, as things seldom are. But I just can’t get passed Song Of Broadway (5-2), the early line and probable post time favorite in today’s Big A feature, a three-quarter mile sprint for state-bred females.

For openers, there’s a plethora of speed that fits this fillies off-the-pace style. She owns the best performance figure in the races, is sharp, seeking her third straight win, and was re-claimed by trainer Linda Rice from her latest. Cornelio Velasquez has ridden her in all her starts.

No choice but to take Song Of Broadway to win, no price restrictions, key-boxing her first and second in exactas with the super sharp and quick Jacky Juice (4-1), and Myrtle’s Gray (8-1), who showed some promise last seen and is working strongly for new trainer, David Duggan.
