She Was Just Seventeen

Interesting co-feature at Aqueduct today, the Busanda at a mile and 70 yards for newly turned three year old fillies.

While many of these are at alternate stages of development, it’s clear that Sweet Seventeen is the most probable winner, high profile connections and all.

Her biggest virtue, however, is her ability, a pedigree and a rail position suited out to the stretchout, especially given the short run to the first turn.

Not only has Graham Motion’s filly never taken a backward step in three career starts but today she’s back on dirt, over which she’s 1-for-1, and the performance figured earned in her Woodbine finale was another forward move despite coming off a double top, most unusual for a filly.

Training purposefully at her Fair Hill base, she has tactical speed if Ramon Dominguez elects to use it to go along with her demonstrated late foot. Looks like a nice prospect.

Taking Sweet Seventeen to win, no price restrictions, and key boxing her in multiples with Bourbonstreetgal, a good third in the Demoiselle last time, and Captivating Lass, coming off a New Pace Top and getting first-time Lasix and blinkers.

Running Totals: (1000) 309-201-142 Total Dollar Return: $2,130.70 [win selections only]

The Magic’s Back

Yet another interesting preliminary allowances as a turf feature at Gulfstream Park; older fillies and mares going 1-1/16th miles.

Easily could have gone in four or five different directions but this looks like a spot to seek out value and believe that Bringbackthemagic (6-1) will slip through the wagering cracks, given the presence of more than a few high profile outfits.

When last seen, the Stephen DiMauro-trained filly was compromised in a well graded turf mile over the course but finished up willingly, beaten a little over a length.

Stormy Atlantic gelding broke maiden at first asking, his lone start at today’s distance, and prior to his latest, was a very willing third in the longer Tropical Park Derby, his Calder finale.

With today’s place expected to be a little livelier, we’re looking for Juan Leyva to take advantage of the experience he gained on this colt last out. Mini-stretchout makes the difference.

Taking Bringbackthemagic to win at 9-2 or greater and key boxing him first and second in multiples with super sharp Grip Hands (4-1), strong finishing Liston (3-1) and fast working Sheppard import Utley (8-1).

Running Totals: (999) 309-201-142 Total Dollar Return: $2,130.70 [win selections only]

Canadian Filly Looks Golden

Today’s Gulfstream Park feature, a preliminary allowance/optional claimer for three year old fillies going two turns is a beauty, drawing a big field with some really nice fillies. It won’t be easy but even a favorite could pay relatively well in this matchup.

There are two fillies dropping significantly in here; Miss Netta (3-1) with an excellent effort in the G1 Frizette then suffering through a very tough trip in the Juvenile Fillies in which she raced very creditably thereafter. She worked very well recently for Kiaran McLaughlin.

But Golden History (8-1) is working well, too, she reunites with winning stable rider Contreras and drops from two straight G2s with an excellent Equiform development pattern with an opening Compression Line, followed by a Reversal and a strong-finish try off very slow fractions, eliminating her chances. Looking for a rebound effort here.

Taking Golden History to win at 5-1 or greater and keying her first and second in exactas with Miss Netta and the very sharp Dancing Solo (4-1).

Running Totals: (998) 309-201-142 Total Dollar Return: $2,130.70 [win selections only]
