A Slick Pick in the Feature

An interesting Aqueduct feature, a secondary allowances optional claimer around two turns for fillies and mares which features to provide bettable odds on any and all starters.

The form fillies in her are the top and bottom, Rick Dutrow’s Cape Cod Girl (3-1) and Kiaran McLaughlin’s Starship Angel (7-2) with Anna Napravnik.

Cape Cod Lady figures to be a tough out. Extremely consistent as a winner of five of eight, she is the controlling speed from the rail and there aren’t many riders as skilled as Richard Migliore on the lead. Her figures are competitive, as are most of the fillies in the group.

But Starship Girl is just super sharp at the moment, a still developing four year old coming off a career best effort, indicating that she’s maturing at just the right time. Owning tactical speed, she can get position despite her inside draw and a sharp :36 2/5 breeze indicates that’s a good possibility here. The post, in fact, should ensure fair value.

Taking Starship Girl to win at 5-2 or greater, boxing her in the multiples with Cape Cod Girl and adding Burning Calories (8-1) to the mix, shipping in sharp for the crafty Scott Volk and picking up Jorge Chavez, riding in excellent form and should suit this mare’s style and the race shape.

This Bluff’s for Real

A choice of “features” today since two Aqueduct allowance races have the identical highest purses. We’re opting for the third race, a sprint for older fillies and mares, because of an opportunity for true value.

That’s what happens when, by definition, the fastest horse is an early line third choice.

Kissa Melissa with Dominguez is a worthy stronger half of the Friedman entry at 9-5, coming off a semi-wide trip against allowance rivals on this surface last out.

But Purrfect Bluff (7-2) is faster, a three-quarter mile specialist coming off a series of sharp wins in arguably tougher claiming company. The five-week spacing looks just right and she’s nicely drawn outside in a small field.

Taking Purrfect Bluff to win at 5-2 or greater and an exacta box with Kissa Melissa.

Bialystock and Zoom

Unlike a lot of six-horse fields, today’s Aqueduct feature, a classified-optional allowances, is highly competitive where virtually all have some kind of chance. Taking a short price--whichever horse that might be--is not advisable.

This very much will be a rider’s race and if the pace isn’t going to be hot, it should be contested. It’s unlikely that all his rivals will allow the speedy His Greatness, coming out of sprints, to get away soft.

Broadway Producer (8-1) has an excellent upset chance. Making his second start off a layup, the mini-turnback to a mile should suit his style. Yes, he has many seconds and thirds on his card but, he’ll never get a better chance to put it all together with this group. Channing Hill should be a good fit.

Taking Broadway Producer to win at 5-1 or greater and keying him first and second in the multiples with the Dutrow boys; His Greatness (5-2) is first time Rick and Smiley Pete (7-2) has improved since moving into brother Anthony’s shedrow.
