Value in Thursday Turf Feature

Today's Gulf feature is an interesting $50K claimer at a mile on turf that features a little of everything, horses moving up ad down the class ladder as the overarching theme. We'll take one that's moving up which should ensure some value.

Fire on Fire (6-1) is on a solid Thoro-Graph pattern, his spacing is excellent, and the raise from the $30 level off a loss indicates that he's doing well enough to handle the rise. Lezcano in the boot from the pole can't hurt.

Taking Fire on Fire to win at 4-1 or greater, an exacta box with LAY-2 Chadster, Artytype (3-1), and adding class dropping Toddster Stockyard (5-2) and the quick Full Salute (6-1) to the super-exotics mix.

Betting a Bunch on a Hunch

In today's dirt feature at Gulfstream, why did Todd Pletcher opt to run Shaan (7-2) here rather than turf, considering she was a fast-closing second in her U.S. debut, the grassy Tropical Park Oaks?

Three conceivable reasons: Her strong late finish while pace was heating up, showing excellent turn of foot, her (3) 1-2-0 slate on AW, suggesting versatility, and brilliant dirt workouts at her Palm Beach Downs, convincing the trainer she can handle it.

Not a bad spot to find that out, and he didn't win all those races because he's mistake-prone.

Taking Shaan to win at 3-1 or greater and an exacta box with super-sharp Meadow Rose (5-2).
