Asmussen Has Giant Chance at Weekend Grand Slam

The closing day feature, the storied Hopeful Stakes, is no longer as much about the future as it is about the now. And right now Steve Asmussen is king of the world.

He has two chances to sweep the weekend stakes with the uncoupled pair of Prince Rooney (9-2), 2-for-2 and a winner something called the Mountaineer Juvenile by 15. But it’s the other, Grand Slam Andre (12-1), who intrigues us.

If there’s anything better than a good race for a youngster it’s two good races, and Andre is coming off two small stakes at Lone Star and Remington, a step up in circuits for a two year old. And his two most recent figures were excellent. His experience edge will be very handy for these youngsters, all trying 7 furlongs for the first time.

Taking Grand Slam Andre to win at 5-1 or greater, exacta boxes with his stablemates, Prince Rooney and Enumerate (6-1), second in the G2 Sanford here, divisional leading Backtalk (5-1) and the very well bred recent maiden breaker Dublin (8-1).

Running Totals: (499) 150-103-69 Total Dollar Return: $1,020.10 [win selections only]

She’s One Hot Chick

Don’t know if the term “special filly” is applicable to Hot Dixie Chick, I only know that the words “sensationally fast” are accurate as they relate to the 4-5 early line favorite for the Grade 1 Spinaway.

In fact, if she had been entered in Monday’s Hopeful, I probably would have bet on her to win that, and she would have been a bigger price.

So, she’s the key to this traditional meet closer, to win, with no price restrictions, and we’ll key her in trifectas with Sassy Image (10-1), Beautician (5-1) and Worstcasescenario (4-1).

Running Totals: (497) 148-103-69 Total Dollar Return: $1,017.50 [win selections only] {Saturday's results not included}

It’s a Bird…It’s a Cold Exacta

Today’s featured Grade 1 Woodward features Rachel Alexandra. You might have heard of her.

Here’s what we’re doing today. I can’t pick against her and sentiment has nothing to do with it. Her last five Equiform figures, especially since she’s getting eight pounds from the field, put her six lengths up on her rivals on her ‘A’ race.

So, rather than go on record with a win bet--she’s 1-2 on the early line and probably that, or 2-5, at post time--we’re going on record with a cold exacta for ROI purposes.

Now we’ll box the exacta, and then press with the filly on top.

The horse we’re using is It’s A Bird (10-1), unfortunately most everybody’s wise guy horse. My reason is that he has a race in his PPs, the Oaklawn Park Handicap at nine furlongs, that puts him on a par with the filly on the Equiform scale, weight allowance notwithstanding.

So, it’s a cold 3-5 for the money. Trifecta players can use Macho Again to block, who looms the logical runnerup given his liking for the Spa surface.
