Finishing Like Gangbusters

Opting for the tougher of the two features, named for the redoubtable Horse for Course, John‘s Call. This overnight stakes is for older turf runners going a marathon distance of 13 furlongs on the Spa turf.

It’s the kind of spot where if there are no classy stickouts on paper, anything can happen, and we’re betting that Gangbuster is that price shot.

While this veteran may not have the company lines of many of his peers, it’s undeniable that his lifetime best go came when he raced this distance on the Keeneland Polytrack last year--and everyone is aware of the synergy between most synthetics.

Returning from a layup earlier this year, he won with a new lifetime top performance, regressed when ambitiously placed in the G2 Brooklyn on dirt, then was seriously compromised by the slow pace last out.

Back at his best distance and reuniting with Kent Desormeaux, aboard for both victories referred to above, this appears an excellent rebound spot at a big price.

Taking Gangbuster across the board at 10-1 or greater.

Running Totals: (699) 226-142-97 Total Dollar Return: $1,578.00 [win selections only]

Taking the Bridge Back Home

Today’s overnight feature is the Latham Stakes for 3-year-old males sprinting 5-½ furlongs on the turf. As you might expect, there’s no shortage of early speed here.

The speed of that speed is likely Presque Isle shipper Dazzled Saint, the fastest horse on the Equiform scale. The lack of turf experience is mitigated with his good form on the Tapeta and switch to Garrett Gomez from the pole. But he will be pressured.

The two that fit the shape are late running Flamin’ Hot, who was narrowly beaten then placed first in the Anderson Fowler at Monmouth after meeting interference. But it’s Bridgetown that intrigues most.

And that’s because he’s run competitive figures with most of these as a two-year-old, now debuts at three with a strong workline, the presence of Leparoux, and strong efforts in graded company as a juvenile. Given his maturity, we expect a lifetime best effort here.

Taking Bridgetown to win at 5-2 or greater and keying him first and second in exactas with his rivals here.

Running Totals: (698) 225-142-97 Total Dollar Return: $1,571.40 [win selections only]

Keertana Perfect Fit for De La Rose

A remarkably contentious turf feature to begin the Saratoga week, the De La Rose overnight stakes for older fillies going a mile on the inner turf and with all the early pace signed on pre scratches, late runners would seem to have a tactical edge.

In Keertana (7-2), players have a little of both. Owning tactical speed and an inside post in a bulky field, look for Jose Lezcano to establish ground saving position throughout until the real running starts. Trainer Tom Proctor’s horses have come out running thus far in the young meet.

It will be up to this young talented rider--profitable lifetime with turf mounts--to find a way through, either out kicking the competition late or holding them safe if Lezcano attempts a mid-race move. While the inner turf is tight, its stretch is actually longer than the Mellon course.

Taking Keertana to win at 3-1 or greater and keying her first and second in exactas with Deveron (6-1), turning back to a more suitable distance after uncharacteristically setting the pace in a 10-furlong Grade 2, and Miss Keller (3-1), a big kicker who ships down sharp for Roger Attfield who sent two fillies to finish 1-3 in the Lake George.

Running Totals: (697) 225-141-97 Total Dollar Return: $1,571.40 [win selections only]
