Value in the John’s Call

Today’s feature is the John’s Call, honoring a Saratoga legend, the ultimate horse for a course. This 13-furlong marathon is wide open. The two most suited to the conditions are, unfortunately, three favorites: Always First (3-1), Mission Approved (4-1) and Guadalcanal (5-1).

Of the three, Guadalcanal is most likely to offer value and get a good trip with his tactical speed, inside post, kick and Calvin Borel insuring that all goes well. Fred Seitz is one of the better turf trainers in the Midwest.

Taking Guadalcanal to win at 3-1 or greater and keying him first and second in exactas and trifectas with his two rivals here.

Running Totals: (473) 142-99-64 Total Dollar Return: $983.50 [win selections only]

A Day at the Beach

The Saratoga Week 2 feature schedule begins with a skull buster, the overnight De La Rose for fillies and mares yet to win a graded stakes in 2009. But oh will they.

We’d love to get cute in this spot but can’t pull the trigger. Cocoa Beach simply owns too much class, is a Grade 1 winner at the distance, obviously was in need of her last start, and trainer Saeed bin Suroor is an otherworldly 36 percent in second off the layoff scenarios and has been live at the meet with a win and second in two starts.

Add a dash of Ramon Dominguez and this 5-year-old will be very tough to deny. This should prove to be the confidence builder she needs.

Taking Cocoa Beach to win, no price restrictions, and keying her first and second in exactas and trifectas with the Mott/Frankel entry of Scolara and Savoir Bien (5-2) and Lindeman (12-1), coming off a career pace low and an excellent back-figure at today’s one mile distance for Christophe Clement and Rajiv Maragh.

Running Totals: (472) 141-99-64 Total Dollar Return: $980.00 [win selections only]
