Identifying the Sanford Winner

Today’s Grade 2 Sanford going in is at least as difficult as the opening day Schuylerville; a representative field in which almost all the runners have some kind of chance; some better than others, of course.

What the race doesn’t lack is speed, and it’s interspersed from one end of the starting gate to the other. The trick is finding the horse with an edge in this kind of matchup of young horses with varying experience.

We believe that edge goes to Bern Identity (4-1). That’s because on Equiform performance figures, his 2 furlong number gives him a fairly significant edge.

Whether he’s good enough remains to be seen; but what is known is that he figures to be the speed of the speed with an alert beginning.

His double-digit maiden score was as impressive as it was fast and he’s come back to work four times since, including a very sharp blowout, the fastest work among his peer group that week—and it came over the Saratoga main track

We’re taking Bern Identity to win at 3-1 or greater and key boxing him first and second in multiples with two top figure runners in this heat; the very well regarded Rose Junction (5-2) and the much improved Handsome Jack (9-2).

Running Totals: (1120) 343-218-168 Total Dollar Return: $2,363.00 [win selections only]

Speed Kills

There's no speed like lone speed and Questing (3-1) is that filly, going for the same connections that won last year's renewal, Godolphin Racing.

Her last performance figure was off that charts and towers over the field. In fact, she is a virtually certainty to regress but the race dynamics should compensate. No one will take her on early, believing she lacks the class, and that should enable her to get it done in wire fashion.

Taking Questing to win at no lower than 5-2, and an exacta box with In Lingerie, a member of the Pletcher-trained uncoupled entry; explosive forward move expected.

Running Totals: (1119) 342-218-168 Total Dollar Return: $2,353.20 [win selections only]

Yes, It’s Two, Two Tips in One

If Jackson Bend (7-5) doesn't pick up where he left off in Saratoga last year, I'm at a loss as to which horse will win the first of 35 graded stakes, the G3 James Marvin. Dominant performance figures, tactical speed an outside draw at 7 furlongs and a killer workline makes him a tough out. Taking Jackson Bend to win, no price restrictions, and will try to get Pacific Ocean (5-1) and Golddigger's Boy in the number.

The G3 Schuylverville is more open than it appears. Four of the seven fillies have an excellent chance. We're opting for the very quick, fast working Sweet Shirley Mae (7-2), a potential trip sitter from the pole with Ramon. The price should be fair; 3-1 or greater. The competition, in preferred order, is Baby J (5-2), Can't Explain (5-1) and Fully Living (4-1).

Running Totals: (1118) 342-218-168 Total Dollar Return: $2,353.20 [win selections only]
