Shipper’s Talent No Secret

Finally, another graded stakes, this one the G2 Distaff for filly sprinters going six furlongs, and perhaps a filly or two that might wind up in the Distaff Sprint at season’s end.

Most while of the group is in various stages of development, there’s no doubt that Secret Gypsy (9-5) is already there.

By definition, she is the fastest of these ladies on the Equiform scale. She’s quite used to dealing with a hot pace, goes well fresh, as does her trainer, Ronny Werner, who’s profitable in the 90-day layoff scenario.

Besides, for Robbie Albarado to give up mounts on his winter home circuit to come up and ride this miss, clearly he doesn’t want her to get too far away. His end of the winning purse will be more than $9,000, and that’s worth anyone’s time.

After that, it’s wide open, many of ‘Gypsy’s’ rivals run virtually the same figures. Zada Belle, while improving, seems to stub her toe vs. better competition. Todd Pletcher has Awesome Ashley moving in the right direction and Royal Michele ships up from Laurel, the winner of the G2 Barbara Fritchie last time out, so who knows?

Stuck in a bit of a rut, taking what’s available. Betting Secret Gypsy to win at 3-2 or greater.

Running Totals: (386) 118-81-52 Total Dollar Return: $822.80 [win selections only]

It’ll Be Awesome, Dude

A little old school mixed in with new age and a pick of Awesome Chic in a highly uninspiring New York feature for fillies and mares going a mile.

Hello Poochi Pooh, Sherine and Spritely’s best races going long are on the lead. Powergirl hasn’t raced in over a year has a seven-pound apprentice assigned to ride.

That leaves Awesome Chic (6-1) who can rally going long and one who comes off a new pace top sprinting.

Trainer Enrique Arroyo is having a good winter, takes over the training of this filly and switches to five-pound apprentice Erick Lopez, riding at a worthy 14 percent at the current meet.

Going for the gusto, such as it is, in a terrible race to solve.

Taking Awesome Chic to win at 5-1 or greater and an exata box with the much improved Hello Poochi Pooh.

Max Loves Broadway Producer

The Thursday feature offers a scant field of five, a classified allowances/optional $100,000 claiming going a mile and 70 yards on the winter track. Just because it’s unappealing doesn’t make it easy.

This is a rider’s race and the pace might depend on the break as most of these are capable of being on the pace and still win under the right circumstances. Unfortunately, a man has to do what he must on occasion and eat a little more chalk dust.

I can see how Broadway Producer (6-5) could disappoint. He’s done that before. But I feel that he’s going to peak here, and he’ll have to if he wants to deal with the very sharp Believeinmenow.

While Broadway Producer is not a speed type, he can chase a soft pace, which might come from either Temecular Creek (6-1) or Believeinmenow (9-5).

The Producer coming out of a sprint, the Grade 2 General George at 7 furlongs, as a matter of fact, and did make a tiny bid before finishing one-paced. Today he switches to Ramon Dominguez, whose strength could pay big dividends here, and his half-mile work in :47 4/5, termed breezing, was third fastest of 128 workers at the distance that week.

If not today, when?

Taking Broadway Producer to win, no price restrictions, using him on top of Temecular Creek and Believeinmenow in exactas, plus a boxed exacta with Believeinmenow.
