LAVA MAN: Great story, Bad bet

Our return from the Christmas break brings us to Santa Anita Park for the Grade 2 San Gabriel at nine furlongs on the turf. It marks the return of Lava Man (7-2); great story, bad bet.

Actually, it’s the remarkably consistent Proudinsky (5-2), trained by Humberto Ascanio, a good story himself. His charge loves the route, arguably is racing in career form, loves the distance and reunites with Raffy Bejarano, a winner aboard the five year old several starts back.

The main danger in fact is the early line favorite, Loup Breton, who was most impressive winning her U.S debut at Hollywood Park, a big figure performance and his second win in four starts at the trip. Garrett Gomez takes the re-ride for Julio Canani.

Taking Proudinsky to win at 2-1 or greater and an exacta and trifecta part wheel using the favorite first with our choice, with Lava Man in the second and third slot. An extra exacta box of our choice and the early favorite.
Running Totals: (565) 177-113-78 Total Dollar Return: $1,221.40 [win selections only]

Get Jiggy with Jiggly

In today’s $25,000-starter allowances in the turf feature at a mile and a sixteenth at Tampa Bay Downs, the hope is that with all the hot trainers in the group that a reliable turf pro will be somehow overlooked, making the 5-2 early posted on Ziggly a distinct possibility.

Through last Saturday’s racing, trainer Anthony Pecoraro was 5-for-8 at the meet, Juan Camillo won with his only local starter and Jamie Ness--well, Jamie is only batting 33 percent with all starters for 2009. That’s why we’re hoping that trainer Dick Small might find the local crowd overcompensating.

Simply stated this 5-year-old mare has been banging tails with tougher all season, acquitting herself well and proving herself a real distance specialist with four of her lifetime six grass wins coming at today’s route. Further, she is reunited with hot riding Rosemary Homeister Jr., who ride her to a facile score vs. a tougher set at Laurel two starts back.

Taking Ziggly to win at 5-2 or greater and keying her first and second in trifectas with Little B Rosson (7-2), Privacy (6-1) and Goldie Lane (4-1).

Running Totals: (564) 177-112-78 Total Dollar Return: $1,221.40 [win selections only]

Good And Lucky a Winning Parlay

We’ll stay at Fair Grounds for the weekending feature, the Tenacious, and overnight handicap for 3-year-olds and up at a mile and a sixteenth.

The race marks the return of early favorite Secret Getaway (5-2), who in the past has been highly competitive in graded stakes company. But his four year old season has been disappointing and in his return from a lengthy layup figures to have his early speed tested.

Good And Lucky (7-2), meanwhile, is a viable alternative. His last was very sharp here and it was fast, too. The thing about this veteran is that he can put two good races together, as demonstrated in the past, is a five time winner over this track and owns two wins at the distance. Shane Sellers, back riding in top form, figures to get his second straight win on this gelding who fit’s the race shape nicely here.

Taking Good And Lucky to win at 5-2 or greater and an exacta box with sharp working King Dan (6-1), going turf to dirt for Dallas Keen and James Graham.

Running Totals: (563) 176-112-78 Total Dollar Return: $1,214.40 [win selections only]
