Surprise Party in the Feature

Today’s featured 7th race at Belmont Park, the overnight Shady Character Stakes, presents a very good opportunity for value--if we’re right, that is.

The favorites for this mile on the turf are Chad Brown’s Big Blue Kitten (5-2), a winner of five straight, and King Congie (7-2), getting class relief in his third off the layup for Tom Albertrani. No knocks on either.

But it’s Naipaul Chatterpaul’s Top Surprise (12-1) that intrigues us the most.

His lifetime best effort came at today’s distance over Belmont turf two starts back, a highly competitive figure to the group before being hindered by a hungry pace in the Grade 1 Jamaica at 9 furlongs, a Pace Low on the Equiform scale. In short, he’s in the mix at a price, especially given low profile connections.

Taking Top Surprise to win at 8-1 or greater, and key boxing him in multiples with the favorites above and adding price shot Clement Rock (10-1) to the exotics.

Running Totals: (956) 296-191-138 Total Dollar Return: $2,050.00 [win selections only]

Who Do You Like? Pletcher or Pletcher

Today’s featured Real Prize Stakes might have only drawn five entrants but this is a trappy event; be forewarned.

In this one Todd Pletcher has himself to beat with an uncoupled entry of Love And Pride (8-5) and second early line favorite R Gypsy Gold (5-2).

The favorite is coming off a New Pace Top and attracts Castellano, who’s ridden both fillies, and gets class relief dropping from the rapidly run G2 Cotillion.

But R Gypsy Gold has been developing rapidly, is “fastest” on performance figures, gets Velazquez, and held her own with the favorite in a presumed company work on Oct. 21.

And three back, she was a good third in the G1 Mother Goose.

Taking R Gypsy Gold to win at 2-1 or greater and an exacta box with her mate.

Running Totals: (955) 295-191-138 Total Dollar Return: $2,042.30 [win selections only]

Don’t Haze Me, Bro

Should today’s Belmont feature remain on the turf, it would be like watching a graded stakes masquerading as a preliminary allowances. Lots of talented runners in today’s lineup with almost all contenders having big upsides.

Imagining (2-1) will be a very tough out for Team McGaughey-Castellano; the same for Unbridled Ocean (3-1) for Pletcher-Velazquez. But we‘re going for the gusto.

Freshman Dorm (8-1) may not look sexy class wise but his Equiform figures are highly competitive with the race favorites. Coming off a Turf Decline Line, badly hindered by the dawdling pace, he finished strongly to win his return to Belmont, where he owns a career best performance figure. The spacing is right and he’s 3-for-4 at today’s trip.

Taking Freshman Dorm to win at 6-1 or greater and key boxing in exactas with the favorites indicated above.

Running Totals: (954) 294-191-138 Total Dollar Return: $2,025.10 [win selections only]
