La Reine Lionne?  Oui, madame et monsieur

Today’s Gulfstream Park featured 10th race, the Grade 2 Honey Fox, is a beauty, so much so, in fact, that it will be a very difficult call. The question is: How good is early line favorite Future Generation (3-1).

She won her U.S. debut more cleverly that the running line suggests, earning an excellent Equiform performance figure, but today’s race is a different animal; much tougher and deeper. However, if she’s legitimately G2 material, she will be a tough out.

Instead, we will take any value available with La Reine Lionne (5-1). Trying to improve her lifetime course record to 3-for-4 last out, she was beaten a nose in the G3 Marshua’s River.

Now she returns with ideal spacing and makes the mini-turnback to a mile, a distance at which she’s 3-for-3. Chad Brown is white hot at the moment; she owns tactical speed and kick, and someone who knows when to push the button in Johnny Velazquez.

We’ll take La Reine Lionne to win at 7-2 or greater and key boxing her in multiples with well-meant mile specialist Romacaca, the aforementioned Future Generation and the returning Bay To Bay (6-1) who could upset the group if set for best in her return.

Running Totals: (1045) 323-204-152 Total Dollar Return: $2,229.40 [win selections only]

With a Rebel Yell…

Secret Circle (9-5) was a game winner of the Southwest Stakes and earns good figures consistently but is worth trying to beat in straight pool given early line odds. Cyber Secret (15-1) sports bounce-rebound pattern, worked brilliantly for, benefits from today’s added distance. Early line odds are out of line.

Taking Cyber Secret to win at 6-1 or greater and keying him in multiples with Sabercat (5-1), training well at his Santa Anita base; tough tripper Adirondack King (6-1), Najjaar (6-1) is 2-for-4 at the trip and 2-for-2 over this ground and the early line favorite.

Running Totals: (1044) 323-204-152 Total Dollar Return: $2,229.40 [win selections only]

He’s a Real Gem

Betting wise, not a very interesting feature at Gulfstream today—but the rules is the rules.

Today's third race is interesting if you’re a Kentucky Derby fan as it marks the season’s debut of Gemologist (8-5) and Currency Swap (9-5), albeit the latter seems better suited to middle distances.

Even if today’s race is meant to be a prep, which surely it is, with a two-race pre-Derby schedule, you can’t come out ill prepared off the bench. But there's no need to get all roughed up in your first start in Arkansas, either.

Now Currency Swap has proven faster and he did win the Hopeful Stakes before going to the sidelines. The one-turn distance suits him better than Geologist, who’s also buried on the rail. But consider the distance, it’s advantage Gemologist.

In the battle of the undefeated, we prefer Gemologist to win, no price restrictions, and no exotic plays.

Running Totals: (1043) 322-204-152 Total Dollar Return: $2,226.00 [win selections only]
