On a Win and a Prayer

An interesting small field Belmont feature, the Cat Chat restricted stakes at a mile for three year old fillies on the main track.

In Acronym (9-5), you have a favorite that made a impressive return to the races for the Bobby Frankel barn at 7 furlongs on the grass and now tries more seasoned, but mostly a lot of returnees from long layups.

Small field, many questions.

The Frankel barn has been waking up in New York of late. Everyone knows that Frankel hasn’t been well, and his hands-on touch has been missed. But in Acronym, this looks like a classic Frankel pattern. But the price will be very short.

The solid/talented and fastest performance horses are War Echo (3-1) and Malibu Prayer (5-2).

After finishing third behind Rachel Alexandra in the Golden Rod, she won the G3 Silverbulletday. But that was on February 7. What’s today about?

Malibu Prayer has advantages. Fastest by definition, she has usable gears, a good post and the distance should suit perfectly. But two turns to one sometimes is a tricky read, even if she was second in Rachel‘s G1 Mother Goose on this track.

Taking Malibu Prayer to win at 2-1 or greater and key-boxing her in exactas and trifectas.

Running Totals: (508) 150-105-71 Total Dollar Return: $1,020.10 [win selections only]

It’s Two, Two Picks in One!

Two stakes, two selections on the day, and a chance to get alive in a rolling double that’s part of a Pick Six with a $66,000 carryover.

In the restricted Chaldea Stakes, Strike The Bell (9-5) is back with straight three-year-old and back on Belmont turf at 7 furlongs where she earned a lifetime best performance figure. Her late kick is complemented with sufficient pace up front here and Ramon Dominguez looks to make it two straight.

But the interesting filly here is Haka (4-1), making her first tart for Christophe Clement. She will appreciate the class relief, dropping from graded stakes company, and raced well enough in her lone turf start as a two-year-old, indicating that her return to that surface is fitting, especially coming off the synthetic surface at Santa Anita.

The winner of the next race, the John Hettinger for state-bred females going nine furlongs, looks like it must come out of the Yaddo at Saratoga. Nehantic Cat (6-5) was the impressive winner but Crazy Catlady (12-1) was only beaten a couple of lengths and had a least a length worth of trouble on the turn.

With the favorite picking up three pounds to 123 and with the ‘Catlady’ returning to her favorite course and switching to Johnny Velazquez, it makes sense not to take a short price on the highweight.

Taking Haka to win at 5-2 or greater and an exacta box with Strike The Bell.

Taking Crazy Catlady to win at 8-12 or more and exacta key boxes with Nehantic and Chestoria (3-1) Take a 2x3 double wheel from the eighth to the ninth races.

Running Totals: (506) 150-105-70 Total Dollar Return: $1,020.10 [win selections only]
