That’s a Fact, Jack

Today’s feature that begins the final week of racing at Belmont Park before the move upstate to Saratoga is the Irish Actress for state-bred fillies and mares at a mile and a sixteenth. And a nice bunch of fillies they are. It probably will come down to a battle between the two favorites; Rewrite (2-1) and Factual Contender (8-5).

Rewrite is such a consistent filly, winning eight of 15 career starts, six of them at this venue. She seldom fails to fire, her last at 7 furlongs was her best ever, and she’s had sufficient recovery time returning from a six-week layup. Christophe Clement has had a great summer meet here, as has jockey Alan Garcia, and the team will save ground leaving from the pole position.

But her task will be difficult today because Factual Contender earns consistently good performance figures and, on balance, has been tested--and responded--against slightly better fillies. But her big advantage here is tactical early speed, something her competitors, including Rewrite, cannot boast. It will prove the difference, as long as Eibar Coa doesn’t rate her into submission, of course.

Taking Factual Contender at 3-2 or greater, an exacta box with Rewrite, and keying Factual Contender first and second in trifectas including Latitude Forty (6-1).

Running Totals: (235) 74-49.27. Total Dollar Return: $452.90 [win selections only]

It’s a Bird…It’s a Plane…It’s Metro Meteor

The preponderance of feature races on turf continues with today’s sprint at six furlongs, a New York bred secondary allowances for 3-year-olds and up/optional claiming $50,000. It’s an interesting blend of accomplishment and potential.

Certainly, Metro Meteor (3-1) is accomplished. In fact, every time he drops to this level, on this course, at this distance, he responds with his fastest efforts. Couple that with a ground saving position and a switch to turf ace Edgar Prado and you have a solid choice.

The potential comes from a 3-year-old and a 4-year-old. The younger Timberah (7-2) is seeking his third straight win and second on this course and distance as he attempts to take the next state-bred condition. He was visually impressive on May 26 while not running particularly fast, but the spacing is right and sophomores improve significantly at this time, especially lightly raced ones.

Five Towns (6-1) has developed very nicely on turf and the 4-year-old earned his best performance figure at this distance, on this course. Second time off the layup for Christophe Clement, a favorable scenario, he figures to improve with another resembling a decent trip, something he didn’t get in his last. Blinkers have made the difference and he should continue marching forward.

Taking Metro Meteor to win at 2-1 or greater and exacta key boxes with his two contenders here, extra ticket with Five Towns.

Running Totals: (234) 73-49-27. Total Dollar Return: $450.10 [win selections only]
