It’s the (Sheppard) Economy, Stupid

Today’s feature at Saratoga is the Grade 1 New York Turf Writers Cup Handicap, a.k.a. the Jonathan Sheppard Stakes. The Hall of Famer has won this race as often as the great Charlie Whittingham won the San Juan Capistrano.

In order to preserve this tradition, Long John has entered four hurdlers in here, the quartet making up two different stable entries. We’d like to reach out here but that’s exactly what we’d be doing; reaching.

In our view, either half of the (B) entry, Sermon Of Love (9-5), looking to repeat last year’s victory in this Spa fixture, and Divine Fortune, winning the Smithwick Memorial here earlier at the meet, his third win in five lifetime Spa starts, and a worthy highweight at 156 pounds..

Interesting horses in here would be the import Dirar (5-1), co-second highweight at 150 pounds , Nationbuilder (4-1), who should benefit from even third in the Smithwick and a switch to Danielle Hodson, and Mabou (20-1), a rare steeplechase claim by David Jacobson earlier at the meeting.

Taking the 2-2B entry to win, no price restrictions, and boy boxing them first and second in the multiples with others listed above.

Running Totals: (918) 289-185-130 Total Dollar Return: $2,000.60 [win selections only]

Contessa Has Them Coming and Going

Today’s Spa feature is the Albany Stakes for state-bred 3-year-olds. This is always an entertaining race on this program and always seems to be won by a nice horse. That trend will continue here, especially if Socialsaul (2-1) emerges the winner.

Since stretching out to a mile back in June, his Equiform figures have done nothing but improve, winning three straight including the two-turn New York Derby at a mile and a sixteenth last time out.

The gelding has tactical speed, kick, bottom side pedigree to help getting today’s 9 furlongs and he reunites with Castellano, who knows him very well.
Trainer Contessa very likely to finish 1-2.

Taking Socialsaul to win, no price restrictions, and boy boxing him in the multiples with mate Preachintothedevil (3-1) and Alstom (8-1), on a Delayed Pace Top and meeting state-breds for the first time.

Running Totals: (917) 289-184-130 Total Dollar Return: $2,000.60 [win selections only]

Everything’s Lovely

Today’s feature is the Union Avenue Stakes for three-year-old state-bred fillies sprinting six furlongs. A three-horse battle on paper but it’s very difficult to beat early line favorite, Lovely Lil (9-5).

Coming in here with a top figure score on the Equiform scale, the filly is also 2-for-2 at the trip and 2-for-3 over the track. If that weren’t enough, it seems Hushion-trained runners simply don’t get beat here, especially when they’ve had a race over the track.

Taking Lovely Lil to win, no price restrictions, and key boxing her in multiples with Nicole’s Miss El (6-1)and Gold For The Queen (9-2).

Running Totals: (916) 288-184-130 Total Dollar Return: $1,997.00 [win selections only]
