Turn On the Spiga

Not an inviting turf feature at Belmont today in that it's a six horse field, excluding MTOs, and it appears only three have a good chance on paper. Of those we prefer Spiga (5-2).

When last seen she was finishing third in her U.S. debut, chasing a slow pace throughout, forced into premature move, then hung late, likely a product of dynamics and possibly needing the race.

She returns at the same one mile distance but the one-turn layout promises to provide a better pace for her to track without being too muzzled early in pursuit of the leader(s). She deserves this chance.

Taking Spiga to win, no price restrictions, and key-boxing exactas with Vagabond (3-1) and Awesome Song (2-1), each exiting the same key race.

Mott Filly Lurking at the Downs After Dark

With NYRA dark, we'll look at Churchill Downs after dark tonight, where an interesting turf feature is in the offing.

Half of this eight horse field is on the improve, including the four early line choices.

Of those, we prefer Wessex (7-2). Bill Mott's horse have been running well here of late and is at his best when he names Brian Hernandez, who fits the filly well and is on a bit of a roll himself. Well drawn with good spacing, the price should be fair as well.

Taking Wessex to win at 5-2 or greater, an exacta box with Sister Blues (7-2) and adding Taxable and Beauly to the super-exotics mix.

This Derby Looks Just Right

The Saturday feature of the day takes place just outside Cleveland at Thistledown, the G3 Ohio Derby at 9 furlongs. It's the perfect place for Girvin (2-1) to find his form.

His Ky. Derby can be dismissed. also remembering he had some issues in the run-up to the race that altered his training schedule. Freshened since, he returns at his optimal distance and is back on schedule with 'Money Mike' shipping in for the re-ride. Race shape and draw suits perfectly.

Taking Girvin to win, no price restrictions, an exacta box with Irap (3-1), if back to his 'A' game, and Untrapped (5-1), back at his best trip with Santana, and adding Talk Less (12-1) to the super-exotics mix.
