Are you looking for the 2011 Triple Crown Dates and information? Listed below is the 2011 Kentucky Derby Date, the 2011 Preakness Date, and 2011 Belmont Stakes date. We'll add more info for each event as the dates get closer.

The 2011 Kentucky Derby will be held on May 7th at Churchill Downs. Coverage for the 137th Kentucky Derby will begin on Versus at 11:00 am (EST) until 4:00 pm, where coverage will switch to NBC until 7:00 pm .

The 2011 Preakness will be held on May 21st at Pimlico Race Course. It will be the 136th running of the Preakness

The 2011 Belmont Stakes will be on June 11th at Belmont Park. This will be the 143rd running of the Belmont Stakes.

It’s a decision I’m still hesitating about, this Horse of the Year 2009 thing. As we stated previously, a vote for one is a vote against the other. I just can’t see it any other way. So you decide, HRI readers. Here’s your dilemma:

Reasons for Rachel Alexandra as Horse of the Year
*John Pricci* - In going 8-for-8 at seven different tracks, she made history on six occasions, relative to running time, winning margin, post position and race history. And we're not counting the 85 years between filly Preakness winners. And, of course, she stepped out of her division in half of her eight victories, defeating males who accounted for 11 Grade 1 winners. View video all 8 of Rachel Alexandra's 2009 races.

Reasons for Zenyatta as Horse of the Year
*John Pricci* - Perfection at the highest level is the rarest of accomplishments. While her 14 victories did not come in 2009, her 14th did. She beat the deepest field assembled all year, male winners of eight Grade/Group 1 races, and she did it within herself, the first of her sex to do so. She won the Grade 1 Vanity Handicap shouldering 129 pounds. She defeated the winner of this year’s Ladies Classic authoritatively on three occasions. View video of all 5 of Zenyatta's 2009 races.

While nearly impossible, try to keep emotion out of the voting process. It’s not whether Zenyatta would have won the Whitney had she entered, or whether Rachel Alexandra would beat Zenyatta because she enjoys an enormous tactical advantage. Those are opinions based on calculation and supposition, not facts. The one thing that’s certain is this is the kind of controversy the sport would love to live with every season.

(Saratoga Springs, NY – December 29, 2008) A thoroughbred horse racing book was selected by the Schenectady (NY) Gazette as one of the Top 10 Books of the Year 2008.

The books selected were chosen because of the quality of their writing. The list included books written by three Pulitzer Prize winners and an Edgar Award winner.

All books chosen by the Gazette were on subject matters that link to New York’s Capital Region or that were written by authors from the region as well as guest lecturers at the New York State Writers Institute.

The newspaper’s annual listing, released yesterday, included “The History and Art of 25 Travers” by Vic Zast.

Zast’s book is about the last 25 Travers Stakes, each captured graphically in the longest continuing series of sporting art in the world – the Travers posters of Greg Montgomery, an artist from Saratoga Springs, NY. “The History and Art of 25 Travers” was published by North Country Books, Utica, NY.

In announcing the selection, Gazette reviewer John Rowen called it a “lively and appealing history of the Travers Stakes, the flagship race at Saratoga Race Course, told with Zast’s informative, charming writing and Montgomery’s vivid posters.”

“The History and Art of 25 Travers” is the first book written by Zast, a former racing industry executive who is a columnist of HorseRaceInsider.com. Zast is a regular contributor to MSNBC.com and The Blood-Horse and has written for The New York Times and National Public Radio. He is a member of the board of the National Turf Writers Association.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The American Graded Stakes Committee of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association today presented its listing of U.S. Graded Stakes for 2009, the results of its annual grading session conducted November 24 in Lexington.

The Committee reviewed 746 unrestricted U.S. stakes races with a purse of at least $75,000, and assigned graded status to 488 of them, seven more than were graded in 2008. A total of 13 graded races were upgraded, including six new Grade I races and seven new Grade II races; 10 new Grade III races were identified. Two races which carried Grade III status in 2008 are no longer eligible for grading.

Six races were upgraded to Grade I status for 2009: the Sentient Flight Group Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint and TVG Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, the Jamaica H. at Belmont Park, Pat O’Brien H. at Del Mar, Clement L. Hirsch H. at Del Mar and Vinery Madison S. at Keeneland.

One race was downgraded from Grade I to Grade II for 2009: the Suburban H. at Belmont Park.

Seven races were upgraded to Grade II status for 2009: the Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, Nashua S. at Aqueduct, Churchill Downs Distaff Turf Mile S. at Churchill Downs, Colonial Turf Cup S. at Colonial Downs, Fayette S. and Thoroughbred Club of America S. at Keeneland and West Virginia Derby at Mountaineer Park.

No races were downgraded from Grade II to Grade III in 2009.

Ten races were upgraded to Grade III status for 2009: the Fall Highweight H. at Aqueduct, Derby Trial S. at Churchill Downs, Round Table H. at Hollywood Park, Woodford S. at Keeneland, Presque Isle Downs Masters S. at Presque Isle Downs, Thunder Road H. and Daytona H. at Santa Anita Park, With Anticipation S. at Saratoga, Massachusetts H. at Suffolk Downs and Sam F. Davis S. at Tampa Bay Downs.

Four races were downgraded from Grade III to Ungraded status for 2009: the Gravesend H. at Aqueduct, Bay Meadows Sprint H. at Bay Meadows, Bill Hartack Memorial H. at Hawthorne Race Course and Kentucky Cup Juvenile S. at Turfway Park. The Memorial Day H. at Calder Race Course and Deputy Minister H. at Gulfstream Park were not eligible for grading in 2009.

Back when horses were actually winning the Triple Crown, the sport of horseracing was completely different than it is today. The sport has grown exponentially since the last Triple Crown winner – Affirmed in 1978 – walked away with the sport’s most coveted title. What about today’s competition has caused the 30-year gap? Horses are bigger, stronger and faster than they were in yesterday’s sport. Visit any local racetrack in the world and you’ll find that most horses are dead even. They’re like the reels on a slot machine – to hit the proverbial triple-7 is a long-shot, even for studs like Big Brown and War Emblem.

The hectic schedule of three races in a five-week span takes its toll on every horse. Pushing for the victory in all three races has caused a plethora of injuries in racehorses. Most recently, Big Brown suffered injury in the last leg of the Triple Crown, Belmont Stakes. The pure gamble of the Triple Crown makes the light shine even brighter on the 11 previous winners.

Winning horse racings Triple Crown is not an easy thing to do. There have been only 11 Triple Crown winners, with the last being Affirmed in 1978.

Saratoga, NY, Aug. 8 ---- HorseRaceInsider.com announced today that HorseRaceInsider contributor Cary Fotias finished second in the Ellis Park handicapping contest Saturday, Aug. 4, 2007 and qualified for the NTRA/DRF National Handicapping Championship in Las Vegas early next year.

The Ellis Park contest was offered in conjunction with the Claiming Crown series, which this year set a record for event handle at $4.9 million. It was the first time Ellis Park hosted the event.

"Our figures did a good job highlighting playable races and horses at fair odds, said Fotias. "In fact, Sal LaGreca, a long time Equiform client, finished third and also qualified for the NTRA championship."

The Ellis contest attracted horseplayers from around the country. Thirty seven contest players put up $2,000 each, half going into a separate pool as prize money, the other half retained by bettors for wagering on mandatory contest races.

An interesting format, players wager their own money on a minimum of six, to a maximum of eight contest races. The only requirements were a mandatory wager on the featured Claiming Crown event, the Jewel, and every bet must be at least half the player's existing bankroll.

Bettors could wager in any pool, and those accumulating the most real money wins.

Short of creating a true playoff system that leads to year-end divisional honors, NTRA/Breeders� Cup has done the next best thing: Taking existing prestigious races and allowing its winner an automatic berth in the Breeders� Cup World Championships.

Able One, winner of the Champions Mile at Sha Tin Race Course in Hong Kong April 29, is the first horse to earn a slot, qualifying for the Breeders� Cup Mile, Oct. 27. More foreign events are expected to be included in 2008.
