In addition, Oaklawn Park, which is staging its signature event, the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby, is also offering the Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap and it’s beauty, featuring horses ranked third and seventh in the NTRA poll, Ron The Greek and Hymn Book, respectively.
At Keeneland, meanwhile, their lynchpin feature, the G1 Blue Grass Stakes showcases juvenile champion Hansen against the world, 10 3-year-old rivals looking to become the new king.
Even though Mike Smith has taken a call on Daddy Knows Best in the Kentucky Derby three weeks hence, he will be on early line favorite Bodemeister (9-5) in the Arkansas Derby. The thinking here is that the extreme outside post in the field of 11 won’t keep him from earning enough graded money to punch his ticket to Louisville.
He is very fast but not runoff fast, as his San Felipe indicated. To insure this, Bob Baffert is quietly removing blinkers, a tack that has worked profitably 36% of the time from a significant sample. He’s been working great, presumably sans eyewear.
On paper, Baffert has himself to beat. His Secret Circle is bidding to sweep the Oaklawn series that culminates in today’s 9 furlongs. The colt’s biggest obstacle, his stablemate notwithstanding, is today’s added sixteenth of a mile but the favorite will be a very tough out here.
We’re expecting big improvement from Najjaar who, while a late rally type, should be closer to the pace today than he was in the Rebel; Calvin Borel rides him back. We’ll trying getting fitting him into the exotics.
G1 Santa Anita Handicap winner Ron The Greek and G1 Donn Handicap hero Hymn Book deserves their role as the two early betting favorites and the respect of the competition, but two other rivals are more interesting on the parimutuel side.
Alternation (9-2) just loves this surface and he handles 9 furlongs very well. He comes up to this the right way and has top Midwest connections in Donnie Von Hemel. But it’s Yawanna Twist (6-1), with a trainer change from suspended-in-Arkansas Rick Dutrow to John Parisella who is the intriguing price shot.
His best Equiform figure was earned at a similar 1-3/16th miles trip in the Preakness, opened eyes in the G1 Carter last year and returned recently with a strong and fast victory in the G2 General George at Laurel in February.
He’s trained well at Belmont Park since and partners regularly with Mike Luzzi. Yawanna Twist’s tactical speed and a position outside quick-early rivals enables the opportunity for a perfect stalking trip, getting the jump on his proven Grade 1 rivals. He has a puncher’s chance in this group.
If a colt is capable of stepping up to defeat Hansen , we have no idea who that should be. White Cloud is primed for a top effort and if that’s not forthcoming here, his Derby prospects would wane considerably.
We’re confident that two rivals will run well. Dullahan (6-1) was an excellent second in his season’s debut behind and has come back to work brilliantly. He handles all surfaces well.
Ever So Lucky’s ability to handle Polytrack is an unknown but not what’s expected of him here. Despite an interrupted training schedule in SoFla this winter, he finished very well in the Swale while only ridden out.
A good workout doesn’t guarantee a good Polytrack effort but is an indication that if this colt handles the surface, he could pose the main danger to Hansen at a big price.

Why did Yawanna Twist go to Gulfstream to workout? Could steal this one on the lead.
Romans likes Dullahan, so I will also.
If Arkansas Derby falls apart, maybe Atigun can pick up the pieces(just trying to be like TTT here)

Reignman, move out!

Dear Reignman:
As you seem to think you are the spokesman for “Everyone,” could you please provide some sort of documentation, or anything at all which would convince me that your statement is true, and I will be happy to move on. Always been accused of my thoughts being bizzare and out of touch, but this is the first time regurgitated. Guess the statement. Speaking of “Everyone,” guess the statement “Everyone loves a winner,” does not hold true. If you would like to discuss this in person, you can find me in the cashier’s line, do you know where that is?

On second thought, I’m sure that Reignman meant “prestidigitation” and not regurgitation. I always get those 2 mixed up myself.
We could go round and round regarding the outcome of the Arkansas Derby, but 5-Secret Circle definitely looks like the one and gets my top billing. The morning line odds maker does not seem to think the crowd will have much respect for 9-Sabercat, who won that inflated Delta purse, but I’m sure he will show significant improvement off that last attempt, and is viable here.
Got to go now, my girlfriend wants me to perform another kind of magic with the vacuum in the living room.

Reignman, since you are new to this site--at least as far as this name is concerned, which is pretty clever, BTW--we’re not much for going after people here, only their opinions.
And since it came out of the blue, where TTT had not made a comment, I’m nlt your what your motive is. As long as Teddy doesn’t misbehave, he’s welcome for as long as he wants to be.
HH, Yawanna Twist worked at Belmont recently, not GP. If you see a GP work, it was when Rick Dutrow was training. The owner wanted to make a change and so he did; John Parisella called the Oaklawn stewards to get their blessing. He will have this horse for at least two races, possibly more.
Since he was barred from racing in so many states, Dutrow was told that he was losing the horse and was asked to pick among Todd Pletcher, Bill Mott and Parisella. Dutrow recommended Parisella. That’s where it stands at the moment.

In the bluegrass state today, I feel Ever So Lucky. It is somewhat of a stab, as it is his first trip around two turns, and his breeding screams distance limitations. Love his style, wonder about the effect of his works, and know that his connections are not prone to high risk moves. Willing to take a shot at 5-1 or better!

p.s. on the tough talk to top turf teddy, in addition of occasional tongue in cheek remarks, many of which are hilarious,mr. TTT is a straight shooting, handicapping fool!

With apologies to Pat Ballard:
Mr. Reignman,
Why all the steam?
What about the T-man
Is making you scream?
Is it his picks
Which keep him in clover
That keeps your pot of envy
Boiling over?
Mr. Reignman,
You’re so alone.
What made you think
TTT we’d disown?
Please turn off
Your venom stream.
Mr. Reignman,
You’re off the beam.

I’m a Hansen fan, but I’m against him today. Still think he’s most formidable flying on the front end. Just can’t see them taking that tack today. I like Dullahan. Only concern is that he gets overbet. I’ll use him with Midnight Crooner (Note TTT: calling him a “Synthetic Teddy") and How Great.

Great call, Kyle! Terrific run by both horses. More later.
