Arrogate Drills Seven Furlongs in 1:25.20 Tuesday at Del Mar

Working on his own with jockey Martin Garcia in the tack, superstar Arrogate clipped off a solid seven-furlong drill in 1:25.20 Tuesday at Del Mar as trainer Bob Baffert and regular rider Mike Smith looked on from the track’s grandstand.

The big, gray colt broke off from the five-furlong pole at 7:55 on an overcast morning and worked about five lanes out from the rail. Track clockers caught him in splits of :25.20, :37.20, :48.40, 1:00.60 and 1:12.60 along the way. He was timed on the gallop out in 1:38.20. The son of Unbridle’s Song easily moved past a pair of unrelated workers down on the rail in the stretch and kept to his business. Garcia gave him a bit of encouragement toward the end of the work.

Australian Horse Racing: a National Pastime

Australia’s oldest sporting activity is horse racing. Since the early days of this former British colony, racing has been enjoyed by people from all walks of life. Today Australia boasts over 400 tracks –more than any other nation.

It is estimated that fixed-odds betting on Australian horse racing has grown significantly over the last few years -- from $14.3 billion wagered in 2009 to $22 billion today, according to TAB. Racing is responsible for the permanent employment of tens of thousands of Australians both directly and in associated industries.

Furthermore, almost every Australian adult (99.9%) has participated in the third most attended spectator sport in the country., even if they only bought a ticket for a small bet in the office round-up for the Melbourne Cup.

Dancer Memorial next for award-winning Walner

If Walner’s six rivals last week felt as though they were run over when the returning Dan Patch Award winner made his seasonal debut with a 7-1/2 length victory in 1:51.1, it’s no wonder.

“You sit behind him and it feels like you’re driving a Corvette with a Mack truck engine,” Walner’s driver, Tim Tetrick, said after the win. “He’s ready to rock.”

Walner’s time, which came in a conditioned race at the Meadowlands, equaled filly Ariana G’s mark for the fastest mile by a 3-year-old trotter this year. Walner returns to action Saturday when he competes in the first of two divisions of the Stanley Dancer Memorial for 3-year-old male trotters at the Meadowlands.
