Live Racing Resumes at Gulfstream with Full Eight-Race Program
HALLANDALE, FL – Live Thoroughbred racing will resume at Gulfstream Park Tuesday, June 25, with an eight-race program of full fields.
A total of 84 horses were entered Friday for the program that will mark the conclusion of the 2012-2013 racing season at the Hallandale Beach racetrack. The 2013 summer season of live racing will be kicked off with programs on Monday, July 1 and Thursday, July 4 before a regular Saturday-Sunday weekly schedule gets underway.
Post time for the first race during the summer months has been set for 12:50 p.m.
A $35,000 optional claiming allowance race will be the featured seventh race on Tuesday’s program. A field of nine horses, including the Kirk Ziadie-trained entry of Runyon Humor and Musical Flair, was entered in the 6 ½-furlong sprint.
Trainer Wesley Ward named Joel Rosario to ride Ecabroni in Tuesday’s feature. Ward and Rosario teamed with No Nay Never in England Thursday to win the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot. Rosario, who ranked second behind Javier Castellano during the winter months at Gulfstream with 89 victories, rode Orb to victories in the Besilu Stables Fountain of Youth (G2) and $1 million Florida Derby (G1) in preparation for a victory aboard the Shug McGaughey-trained colt in the Kentucky Derby.
The 10-cent Rainbow 6, a popular multi-race wager that has produced multi-million-dollar payoffs, will get underway in the third race, while the 50-cent Pick 5 will begin in the fourth race.
Because Tuesday’s program is the official final program of the 2012-2013 meeting, there will be mandatory payoffs for both wagers. Beginning on July 1, there will be a carryover pool for the Rainbow 6, as well as the Pick 5, if no one holds a unique winning ticket.
Nominations Out for July 4th $100,000 Armed Forces Stakes
Nominations closed Friday for the $100,000 Armed Forces Stakes on Thursday, July 4th. The 1 1/16-mile turf stakes for Florida-bred 3-year-olds and up attracted 32 nominations.
Among the nominees for the first stakes of the official first day of the 2013 summer season are Dale Romans-trained Saint Of Saints, an allowance winner over the Gulfstream turf course in March; Dennis Manning-trained Roman Tiger, a veteran gelding with a stakes victory at Gulfstream on his resume; and Starship Wildcat, who broke his maiden at Gulfstream in January and has finished no worse than second in six starts on turf.
