Shoemaker Mile Quotes

$300,000
Shoemaker Mile
Grade I
70th Running
1 Mile (Turf)

Jockey Quotes

JOE TALAMO, OBVIOUSLY, Winner: "He is just an unbelievable horse. He did everything today pretty much the way we planned. We were cruising early and he kicked away nicely. He gave me the same feeling as he always does, he got up there, started to relax and then he gets in that big high cruising speed. He is the ultimate professional. He knows his job and knows very well what he has to do. There’;s nothing sweeter than for (Mitchell) to get his 900th win (at Betfair Hollywood Park) in a Grade I.’’

VICTOR ESPINOZA, ZA APPROVAL, Second: "He ran great. I just sat right in behind the pace to allow him to make a nice run. No one went with (Obviously). This horse is very nice and kind. He ran a great race."

MARTIN PEDROZA, WILKINSON, Third: "No excuse. My horse ran well. He just got outrun today by a monster.’’
Trainer Quotes

MIKE MITCHELL, OBVIOUSLY, Winner: "It's funny, the first time I routed this horse ( a five-length victory last Aug. 2 at Del Mar), I didn't tell (Talamo) anything. He opened up five or 10 lengths down the backside, and I was ready to strangle him when he came back. Then, at the eighth pole, I said ‘God, I love that kid.’ That's just the way he likes to run so I never give any instructions. We'll definitely run in the (Grade II, $250,000) Del Mar Mile Handicap (Aug. 25, a race Obviously won in 2012). I'll sit down with (owners Anthony Fanticola and Joseph Scardino) and discuss what's next for him after that. The main goal is to run back in the Breeders' Cup Mile. I turned him out last year for no problems, just to freshen him. He's razor sharp right now. He's training so well and he looks so good. I think he's better than last year. He's stronger and a little bit more filled out. It's great to get 900 (wins at Betfair Hollywood Park), especially in a race like this."

CRISTOPHE LORIEUL (Asst. to Christophe Clemente), ZA APPROVAL, Second: "It's very hot today, but I thought he ran great. The problem is that when Obviously gets loose on the lead and nobody pressures him, it makes it very difficult.’’

JEFF MULLINS, WILKINSON, Third: "He did the only thing he can do; get out there in good position and hope for the best. I didn't give any instructions, I left it up to (Pedroza)."

Notes: The final time of 1.32.86 was the fastest in the Shoemaker Mile since Designed for Luck went 1:32.81 in 2004….The win price of $2.60 was the smallest in race history. The previous low of $2.70 was set by Bolero, who won the 1950 Spring renewal when the race was called the Preview Handicap….Talamo leads all riders at the current Spring/Summer meet with nine stakes wins.
