Ballerina (G1) Quotes
Ollie Figgins, III, winning trainer of Dance to Bristol (No. 1): "Her will to win is what makes her special. Book Review had dead aim on her inside the eighth pole. Once she saw her coming, she just wouldn't let her by. She broke nice and clean and [jockey Xavier Perez] just let her get her rhythm. She eased to the outside a little past the half-mile pole, it looked like, and everything went pretty smooth. We knew we had a good horse, and we were hopeful [we could come to Saratoga and win two graded stakes races]."
Will she go straight to the Breeders' Cup? "We'll get her back to the barn, see how she is, and go from there. Once again, she's a very easy filly, she lets you know how she is. If she bounces out of the race well, then we may look for something."
What does it mean to get a Grade 1 victory with her? "It's very special, very special. The filly, she's done everything right, nothing wrong. She's a good horse, and I hope the world knows that."
Xavier Perez, winning jockey aboard Dance to Bristol (No 1): "I was a little concerned [about the one post], and then when the accident happened behind the gate, she kind of got impatient. She got a sharp break and I asked her to settle, and she did it. I put her right behind the leaders and she just dropped the bit and got comfortable. When I asked her at the five-sixteenths to move, she responded pretty good and gave me a hundred percent and just kept going. When she felt that horse, Book Review, coming on the outside, she just kept digging in."
"It worked out perfect, because the speed went. I was the only one that was right behind them. I looked outside and I was clear, so I started drifting out a little bit until I got the position where I wanted to be where I was sure nobody was going to come around me."
"I was fully confident the whole time. When I started riding her, she took off running and when she felt the horse coming near her, she just kept going. She never let that horse by her."
"She's something else; she's amazing. She's the best horse I ever rode in my whole career. I think it's going to be the one that's going to take me to the Breeders' Cup."
John Terranova, who saddled runner-up Book Review (No. 8) on behalf of trainer Bob Baffert: "It was a great effort. Bob sent her in a few days ago from Del Mar. She came in in great shape. Everything was right; she fired, she ran a great race, and just came up a bob short."
Rafael Bejarano, jockey aboard runner-up Book Review (No. 8): "I put my horse into position and followed the winner the whole race. I had an opportunity to pass her in the stretch, but the other horse never quit."
Kiaran McLaughlin, trainer of third-place finisher Villanesca (No. 2): "We're happy. We wanted to win, but we'll take third. It was a great run, excellent ride, and we're happy we got third. It got a little tight on [Villanesca], but [jockey John Velazquez] didn't have enough horse to stay up in there."
