Mentor Cane euthanized following training incident

ELMONT, N.Y. - Mentor Cane, second in the Grade 1 Foxwoods King's Bishop on August 24 at Saratoga Race Course, was euthanized on Thursday following an injury he incurred during a workout this morning.

The 3-year-old suffered a right-hind lateral condylar fracture and a comminuted right-hind P1 fracture, according to Dr. Anthony Verderosa, Chief Examining Veterinarian for the New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA).

Trained by John Shirreffs for Jerry and Ann Moss, Mentor Cane posted a five-length maiden victory on July 6 at Belmont in his third start. He was fourth in the Grade 2 Amsterdam on July 28 at Saratoga prior to the Foxwoods King's Bishop.
